Can I ride a bike with a blown exhaust?

As the subject asks...

I think the exhaust "blew" on the way home tonight, if that is the correct way to describe it. It has suddenly got very loud - sounds like the noise is coming from the gasket so I guess it needs replacing.

I could probably do that at the weekend, but I still need to get to and from work this week. I was kind of worried that running with a dodgy exhaust might make it run lean so seize the engine. Or is that bollocks?

I'll check this thread in the morning at breakfast so I can find out if I need to take the bus or not! Thanks for any help.

No, it's a 4T Honda cb500.

Depends on how badly it was blowing I guess. I wouldn't use the bike if it had no exhaust system but if it was only a partial leak. Then yes, I would .

Like Jay said - bollocks to it, just ride it.

One of the bolts that fixes through the exhaust port flange (hehe, i love that word!) on my NSR lossened off once, and apart from sounding quite loud it didnt do anything. I wouldn't ride it like that for long though, just don't thrape it and it should be ok.

Edit: Didnt realise it was a 4T. In that case just ride the bloody thing.

Check you've not shed any exhaust nuts. You can get away with a small hole/ leak, but I wouldn't leave it too long.

Personally I wouldn't risk it.

As I think I may have killed an engine on a previous bike by riding it with a blowing exhaust.

Though my bike did sound like Mike Hailwoods GP Bike of the 70's when blowing!

l,ve done 30-40 miles on a bike with both rear collector box gaskets blown out (bloody loud) with no problems, but it was a superdream

I rode my CX500 around on nearly open pipes for a while Collector box went), sounded lovely, but eventually it trashed the exhaust valves, I'd say use it gently for work, but get it fixed asap.

Maybe try gently nipping up the bolts if it is blowing round the exhaust manifold (dinnae shear it though!)

Check where it is blowing, exhaust gas is hot and will melt plastic bits.

Observe the result of a cracked header pipe on the coolant bottle of my mates KLR650

I would say ride it, just don't go for any top speed runs. It will do some damage eventually (possibly the exhaust valves as Robin mentioned, if really unlucky possibly burn a hole in a piston), but in light use for a week or so I would think you will fine.

I rode my DR for a little with the right hand header loose - it was /very/ loud as you may expect for a big single.

Got it back on, but it actually fell off while riding at a mx track - riding it back to the van it was making a constant backfire flame coming out of the port.

(I suspect that may be less good for it .

Don't you mean a blowing exhaust?

Blown is only ever used in the context of engines as a slang word to indicate that the engine has one or more turbos fitted .

PS - in showing off my maxing knowledge, i seem to have skipped the issue at hand: I hope you fix your exhaust .

drove around for 2 weeks with one downpipe not attached (about 3cms from the engine head) no damage done (not that i can see any:S)

until you can fix it properly you also may want to raise your needles a notch, richen the mix, to prevent potential melting of things.

Is there some kind of special knack to using this exhaust putty stuff?

I put it on last night after I got home from work, therefore the exhaust was still warm as the instructions suggest.

I put the stuff on the hole, then it says to either run the engine gently to cure the putty, or leave it overnight so I just left it overnight.

Next morning when I started the engine it was as loud as ever so when I looked at the putty it was blowing up in a bubble so clearly hadn't cured! By the time I got to work it had cured to form one large, but burst bubble.

So it doesn't cure overnight and just running the engine made enough pressure to "inflate" the putty so how am I suppoed to cure the stuff?

Okay, I left it for 2 days to dry and I think it is more or less okay. It is alot less nosier, but I can still feel some exhaust gases, so there must still be a small hole.

My question now is - will it pass an MOT like that?
