RIP Unknown biker - A629, 01/11/05

I was riding home from Halifax, West Yorkshire today about 4:00 pm and witnessed a fatal accident.

A lad of about 26 was filtering through slow moving traffic too fast and hit an oncoming truck.
It looked like a head on collision and his bike, (looked big and blue, im not sure of the model), was a wreck. I filtered past a short que of traffic and when i saw the bike i got off to try and help. About 3 other people were their already, one had put the rider in the recovery position.

Another bystander was on the phone to the ambulance service who said to remove his helmet. That sounded odd, I always thought you mustn't do that in case of a head injury. So we took off helmet and saw his face was blue and that blood was coming from his mouth – he looked a mess. We took his pulse but it was really weak.

The ambulance arrived shortly afterwards and they put a ECG monitor on him, we asked if he would live but the paramedic said “No, he's already dead”.

It was an awful experience and I felt really worried riding home. I imagine i will be a safer driver with that in mind.

In case any of you know him; he was wearing red leathers and a red helmet, his bike was big, looked like a litre bike and blue.
The accident happened just outside of Denholme, West Yorkshire, BD13.

I'm not that shaken fast_tzr and phantomtek, but thank you for the concern. I must admit it was a shock and it made me realise how exposed you are on a bike. Still, I think it will make me a more cautious driver - my love of biking is still just as strong.
I feel really sorry for his family and friends of the rider though. He was probably going home from work to see his girlfriend or family and then next minute he's dead. Poor chap

I was passing right by there at that time. Coming down the Denholme & Brighouse road from Queensbury towards Thornton.

I wondered what the big traffic jams and the copper directing traffic was about, must have been this.

a bit OT, but TBH the shock may take a while to kick in, i saw the aftermath of an accident with the rider lying dead on the pavement, at the time i thought jesus thats bad but the next day it hit me pretty hard while i was riding. just take it easy and be prepared to feel a bit wierd when you ride next.

Hi XLand,

Glad you took my advice and posted this.

Just thinking about this makes me feel sick.. The poor guy, I can't imagine what it must be like to witness something like that.

Chills me to the bone to think how quickly someones life can be extinguished.

Please be careful guys, we don't want anyone else to get hurt this winter, the time for fun riding is over. (Not that I'm saying it was his fault, just no point increasing risks even further in these conditions)

well there have been plenty of car drivers who do not give way and cut me up already. car drivers do silly things too, but it just so happens this time it was a biker. if i do something wrong, i may pay with my life. if a car drivers cuts me up, i know i would rather be in a damn car than on my bike.

i've only had a 125, but i feel that there is a strong biker community. when i first had my bike, and had problems, fellow bikers would try to help me out. to lose one is a lost to bikers imo.
