Do you find its much better to bodge something that doesnt fit or work? (Assuming the end result means you've saved some cash)

Or do would you never dream of a bodge job?

Depends on what you call a bodge though. I think you may have a different oppinion than I do on this subject.

What I would call a bodge is a temporary repair using any materials to hand. If I used those same materials to effect a permanant repair, I would call that 'fixing my bike'.

So, temporarily stopping an oil leak round a crankcase cover by smearing hermatite then epoxy over the outside of the leak is a bodge.

Cutting out a new gasket from an old cereal packet is a fix.

Substituting proper gasket paper for cereal packet is a 'good fix'.

Getting a dealer to do it using a genuine gasket is 'pissing money against the wall'.

This is the kind of bodge im talking about mate, one that either gets you out of trouble long enough to get home, or fixes it completely. If its cheaper then a proper repair its a bodge!

I will always do the job properly if can BUT...some of the methods are ......different shall we say Cool

Soldering wires together using Plumbers solder, flux, a blowtorch and a cold chisel springs to mind...

Or welding plastics with an old screwdriver and the aforementioned blowtorch...

Or making washers with some sheet metal and a holesaw...

All do the job but are slightly unconvetional, what I will not do is bodge badly, a nail instead of a fuse is an accident waiting to happen Sad

I'm probably being pedantic, but by that rationale, lapping in a 2-stroke cylinder head rather than buying a head gasket would be a bodge. This is despite the engineering principles behind it being entirely sound. A bodge would be to spray the old gasket over with a rattle can then re-use it because: a) it will eventually fail and b) when it does, you wont be able to remove it again.

I suppose what I am getting at is that a bodge is a repair that either doesn't do the job quite as it should or one that you know is going to fail eventually.

If the bodged componant works as designed and proves to be reliable, it is no longer a bodge but a repair.

on my old gpz i did some super bodging,
a switch to turn the fan on, numerous other bodges inc fitting a suzy bandit can to a nexus exaust system
the best bodge had to be when i was going to a lan party in kent from sheffield, I needed some way of fitting my pc case to the bike safetly, so i bodged together a rack at just the right hight to fit it on the back of my bike perfectly,
also on the way back my rear light packed in due to dodgy earth so had to cable tie my front brake slightly on so the brake light was on all the time,,

worked well , brakes were a bit worn and warm by the time i got back home but i survived.

Easier way is to overadjust the back brake light switch. It is on a screw thread, overtighten it and the brake light is on all the time without having to apply the brakes. That or pull the two wires off the front brake switch (they are spade terminals) and tape them together. Wink Thumbs Up

This definition of bodging seems to be aimed at home mechanics doing things in a way which means they don't get ripped off by the stupendous prices of official spares and dealer servicing prices. So long as your bodge isn't something which is a half-arsed attempt at a repair because you don't know what you're doing, then it makes perfect sense to repair things yourself, using whatever materials you can get your hands on.
