Hi all

Just thought I would ask you all your opinions on what type of gear to get.

When i pass my test I will be riding a Kawasaki VN800, now to me I think that wearing textiles wouldnt suit this bike with leathers being the natural option.

TBH I prefer the look and feel of leather but my instructor says textiles are a far better job due to heat and comfort benefits. He also said that when leather gets wet its an absolute nightmare. If I was getting leathers I would plan on buying some cheap rainproofs to throw over the top if it starts to bucket down.

All opinions welcome.

If your ridieing it all year then textiles will make life easyer..

Allthough with leather you can also get yourself a rain suit, but its extra hassle..

Leather will withstand more in a crash (you can't do a trackday without leathers) but textiles tend to slide as opposed to make you tumble.. so both have good/bad points there

Hein gericke is a good place to look, MAKE SURE THEY FIT its the most important thing as far as safety goes!

Got the bike yet?
Good luck with the test Thumbs Up

On a cruiser you need leathers with tassles the whole way down your arms and legs. None of this alpinestars rubbish.

I'd get the leather - a good set will outlast textile stuff by years.
Its not a big deal to carry some lighter waterproofs if there's rain about.
And if you use some leather dressing they will shed water for a while anyway without getting too damp.
Maybe your instructor is Vegan Laughing

Have an deposit paid on the bike and they have agreed to keep it until I pass my test. I cant insure the bike until then anyway and I dont fancy having an unisured bike sitting out the back.

Theory test in on thursday, fingers crossed.

If you're really wanting to know about the benefits of one over the other, have a look through the posts T.C made on the topic. He knows his stuff.

textiles arent a tight fit, so you can still get gravel rash type friction burn injuries that you dont get with tight fitting leather

id get both, buying second hand off ebay if necessary

as they are both good but at different things.

sometimes i wear leather, sometimes textiles

I have both textile and leathers. Once I got the leathers I never used the textiles again, it doesn't rain here so I can't see why to wear the textile instead.

Leathers will suit the style better, but a proper leather jacket and jeans not a one piece power ranger suit.

I just have a leather jacket that I use all year round.... its fairly waterproof when zipped up properly (lets a bit in when its raining hard), its comfortable and practical to wear off the bike, its cool enough with just a t-shirt under it in summer and warm enough in winter if you wear a couple of t-shirts and a hoodie under it.

I think its the best compromise.... not only that, if you have a cruiser it has to be a leather jacket. I got mine from hein gericke, good quality and very sensible prices Thumbs Up
