Unless you've got a manometer don't bother trying, just take it into a garage, it's not all that expensive Thumbs Up

Now that looks a useful and quite obvious solution. Wont be too accurate i dont suppose but for next to nothing its good.

TBH from what i believe to be true it will be more accurate than a mercury device as mercury travels less distance than water per unit of flow and hence using water rather than mercury you can see the error in the balance much clearer than mercury, and hence tune the carbs to a greater degree. think mercury is only used due to the compact nature of the substance, hence user friendly unless you crack one of the tubes open! Sick Evil or Very Mad
someone may need to confirm this of write it off as BS

Hi

The tubes of mercury are open anyway (and the stuff came in a seperate bottle). Not seen mercury gauges for sale for years though.

Think mercury is 13~14 times heavier than water, so the water vacuum gauges will need to be larger by about the same amount which will make them rather too large to use most of the time..

All the best

where do you connect it onto on the carbs and what stops them from sucking the water in?

Hi

Nothing stops the water / mercury going into the engine except the height of the pipe.

If you look at the intakes between the carbs and the engine you will probably find either a pipe with a rubber cap over it or a small philips head bolt covering a hole. These are where you connect the vacuum gauges.

I have heard that some Hondas have had some silly system where they have no proper connector but instead you puncture the intake with a hypodermic needle.

All the best

Keith

Just buy: https://www.carbtune.com/carbdtls.html theres good instructions too. It's very easy and you'll ever wondered why you'd paid garages £30-40 to do it.

I've got a set as well and they are the mutts nuts, they even do strokers, if you hang the guages upside down.

Cheers

Hi,pblack.

Carburators balance it's a simple operation that (with the valve clearance check) can improve deeply the low speed driving (in the city traffic for example).
Operation involves only the idle screw if the engine are in good condition, and the air screw too if there's some leaking in cylinder.
In the second situation this is a more complicate and expert-mechanic work.

I only suggest you to turn the carburetors idle screws little by little trying to balance (if you have a four cylinder engine) the 180°phased cylinders in couple before and after the two couple between (e.g. on my Suzuki engine the first step is balancing the n°3 & n°4 before and the n°1 & n°2 after. The second step is balance the two couple between).

More the engine are in good condition, more you can read steadily the instrument.

A simple self-made instrument can be made by four table-tennis ball, four glass tube (from chemical furniture) with internal diameter close more than possible to the balls diameter, four air flow regulators and four rubber hose to collect everything to the carburators.

Remember to set the instruments before the balance following this procedure:
-choose a cylinder like you need.
-collect the glass tube n°1 to the carburetor of the cylinder.
-set the air flow regulator until the ball stays steadily at the middle.
-repeat the procedure for the other three glass tubes using always the same cylinder.

Obviously the description are rough but i hope to have explained all clearly

ciao Luigi
