Hi all,
My CG is rusty in many places. Some on the frame is quite heavy. I'd like to
1. remove the rust
2. paint over
3. protect all areas
so:
1. Should I wait until the weather's nicer, or not?
2. Can the same procedure be used for the exhaust, and the frame, and the fasteners?
3. Is a wire brush the best way to remove the rust?
4. Paint. Searching on here, Stinkwheel has recommended stove paint for the exhaust (I'm quite positive about rattishness ). Is heat-proof paint suitable for other bits? Or what's a better recommendation? And Scottoil FS365 for protection?
Thanks for taking the quiz
I can post some pictures if you want a laugh
Should be inheriting some handlebar muffs from a friend soon. Grrreat for the cold thumbs.
Cheers,

Hey these answers should be a of some help
1. Should I wait until the weather's nicer, or not? No the sooner the better before it spreads anymore and you want it protected over the wet months really.
2. Can the same procedure be used for the exhaust, and the frame, and the fasteners? Yes as long as you use high temperature paint for the exhaust thats fine, but try getting some silver colour because black will look a bit daft on your chrome pipe
3. Is a wire brush the best way to remove the rust? A wire brush or any abrasive material really, as long as its just suface rust your removing if its gone right through the frame may reuire grinding out and re-welding
4. Paint? Halfords sell some good high temperature paint for 5.99 a can, available in different colours, its good stuff and protects as well. I recommend as a protection material, old engine oil. cover the exhaust and any rusty engine parts in old engine oil then once it heats up it will provide a protective layer over any metal. It looks dull but protects
Hope that helps , Dan ____________________ Don't ride it, RAG IT!! |

Would suggst Hammerite Rust Remover Gel or Hammerite Kurust.
Have used the latter and found it ok. Turns rust black and then can be painted over. However, only used on small areas and careful not to get onto paintwork.
I think the Rust Remover is for larger areas.
Info on Kurust here - click me.
Rust Remover info here - click me.
Found they also do a dip (info here) that's useful for nuts, bolts, etc. Not used this either but will look into it.
