Wont start, even when bumping! There is enough oil / petrol in, and the spark-plug is fine. Battery keep's depleting its power, but the bike still wont turn over when connected to a charger. I wouldnt mind, but theres a bloke coming to view the bike in 2 hours and it was running fine before! Any idea's?

I can't help you geezer but the same thing happened when I was selling a car. Had a few problems with it, so wanted to get rid. A feller and his daughter cames to look at it, turned the key and it wouldn't start. It was horrible, like a nightmare, he came back the next day, it wouldn't start again first off but eventually got it started. His daughter loved it though and he grudgingly gave me the money for it...

I may have said it before on here, but I am not alone in wanting to tell the world to AVOID Fiats. This one looked great but was fucked by 53k.

Sometimes a little injection of carb cleaner down the plug holes can do wonders for an engine which doesn't want to start, or at least it will narrow down the problem to the fueling . Have you had the tank up lately or anything? If you had trapped or kinked a fuel line it would have problems starting.

If it isn't turning over at all, a freshly charged battery might be what it needs. If it isn't turning over even with a freshly charged battery, it's entirely possible that said battery is gubbed. Do you hear the relay clicking or making funny whining noises? If not, try a different battery that you know is good. If that still doesn't work, try shorting across the relay to effectively connect the battery to the starter directly.

The engine ran for long enough to suck more fuel into empty carburettors last time I used carb cleaner on my VT spark plug holes. Anyway, my bet would be on the battery or fuel line/ filter.

Hmm, I will have to give the battery a charge. My immediate thought was the spark-plug, but evidently it has to be the battery.

I get like a whirring noise when pressing the starter button, oh I dont know.. Today of all day's.

I experienced a similar situation when I tried to sell my Bandit. Turned out to be the master fuse had corroded.

I always bump start bikes by just knocking them into gear whilst moving. Has the advantage that it is far easier to push the bike and build up some speed with the bike in neutral that in gear with the clutch pulled.

Is the engine turning over when you use the starter motor? It can happen with some starter motors that the starter spins away happily and very quickly on its own but does not engage with the engine. Are you getting a spark?

I have also seen an RS which would not start on the starter motor (would crank over fine) but could be bump started if you built up enough speed. Cause was the gap from the ignition pickup to the flywheel was too large and so only managed to trigger the ignition at a greater speed than the start (or a normal attempt at bumping) would generate.

All the best

Keith

So you reckon if I use nuetral build up enough speed and then drop into 1st it may work? Its just about breaching the ignition gap?

Might well work. Worth a try. But lift the tank up, whip the plug out and check it is sparking first (and check if the engine is actually turning over rather than just the starter motor).

From memory the gap is meant to be around 0.5mm, and on the bike that was misbehaving it was well over double that.

All the best

its a 2t 125... should be ok to push in gear.

ive done it to a 4t 250 crosser a few times.

Any resistance is bad and slow you down in getting some speed up.

All the best

I am having similar trouble with my RS. The starter motor would spin up but the cog wouldn't engage the flywheel properly. The starter cog would spin but not lock into place and just chip itself. Eventually, the motor gave up and rotated very slowly just before the electrics packed in. When I removed the tank to observe the damage, it turned out the positive terminal had melted Confused (anyone tell me why?)

At this point I unplugged the starter motor and tried to bump start a little but to no avail. I'll try knocking her into first and try using a different spark plug. I think the problem lies with the battery not having enough charge to supply the motor with a large enough voltage to overcome compression. As the positive terminal is half melted anyway, I have bought a new one that has not yet arrived but I think it would be worthwhile to take a look at the starter motor as well.

Does your problem resemble mine?

the problem is
1. its an aprilla
2. it a 2 stroke
3. its itallian

You shouldnt have to bump start it at all, get your self a battery optimiser
The terminal would only melt if a fuse failed or faulty wiring
unless youve replaced it with the wrong terminal (i doubt that)
Check for spark if there no spark 1st battery (as said) then you ant to check your HT lead using an Ammeter its should read i for infinite
Either that or just take it too a mechanic Smile
