my insurance was due to end on the 22nd of january, but come the 23rd no renewal notice still - by this time i had renewed with carole nash anyway so thought nothing of it!!!!

anyway - today i get some new policy documents from bennetts!!!!

i had not received the letter saying how much it would be and it said that my insurance would continue with AXA through bennetts from the 22nd of Jan!!!!

it also said they had tried to take payment and it was unsuccessful!!! NO SHIT!!! it wasn't in the account!!!!

so i rang them saying that they had no right to renew my policy without my authorisation and for them basically to shove it!!!!

their response was that it wasnt their fault i hadnt received the letter and had continued to renew it anyway!!!!

she then said that almost all companies do this - i haven't known this - most letters for renewal normally say that if they are not contacted to renew the policy it will end and thats that!!!

WANKERS - anyone else had this problem with any other company????? Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

They want a good slap for trying to make unauthorised withdrawals from your account. Unless you had some odd arrangement with them, you had a contract for them to provide 12 months insurance. After this point the contract is at an end.

Check your statement, if you have been charged for a failed transaction, kick up a stink.

Make sure you tell your bank to cancel the direct debit mandate to them if they are up to that sort of crap (assuming you were paying by DD), there is a good chance they might try again.

I had exactly the same problem, with Norwich Union Direct.

Basically I had a works Van.
I sold in in Aug 05 but didnt cancel the insurance as I was only 2 months off getting 3 yrs NCB.

After the last payment was made I canceled the dirct debit.

Job done. Im happy.

I get a letter from the thevin bastard two months later about not making my payments by direct debit and they want payment in full!

WTF!

They 'supposedly' sent me two renewal notices.

It seems to be a common occourence people aren't getting these doesn't it!

Anyway, the first ming mong I talk to tells me I have to pay at least for the first month, and then I can cancel - oh, but here's the best bit, there's a cancellation charge of £££!

After politley telling them to get fucked and I wasnt paying anything they conceded.

I dread to think how many people they rip off with there cancelation charge rubbish.

I had something similar on a plus side, forgot to renew my policy and rang the company up about a week after it had lapsed and they said thats ok we automaticly renew it and give you 2 weeks to pay and if you dont pay they cancel it. Cant remember who it was with now.

Yep, I had this with my car insurance with Tesco. They sent a renewal letter through, but I'd found it cheaper elsewhere. So decided to ignore it and not contact them to renew. Anyway, two month after the end of the policy I check my bank statement and see they are still taking money!!! So I phone them and ask them what the hell is going on. She tells me to read the renewal letter, so I did.

In the 'quite small' print at the bottom, it states that if you do not phone them and tell them NOT to renew your policy (ie: ignore the letter) they will automatically renew it for your anyway (how nice of them!).

To be quite honest, I think that its a f***king joke. I told her I wanted to cancel it as I never asked for it to continue. She then trys to tell me they have to charge for cancellation, at which point I laugh out loud, tell her there is absolutly no chance of that, and hang up. I got onto the bank, cancelled the direct debit and never heard from them again (over 3 years ago now).

I tried arguing that I had originally signed a direct debit for 10 months with them and that they had broken the agreement by continuning to take money after that period. But she was having none of it, saying that cause I hadn't contacted them they just carry on, and its all stated on the renewal notice.

I suppose this could be handy for people who might otherwise forget to renew their insurance.

I agree its cheeky and my insurance company of the year just gone didnt do it. I was suspicious they would though and rang to make sure they didnt automatically renew.

When I was getting quotes, Bennetts were the most expensive, so switching is qutie a good idea.

Hi,

Its quite common and you often agree to a continuous DD or credit card payment (its in the small print)

However last year for my bike I did not geta letter and it did not get renewed, it was a few weeks before I thought my insurance is up soon. Embarassed

These days you have to make sure you read everything really carefully, can cancel DD as soon as your done with them.

Regards
C

I think this is an issue that needs bringing to the attention of the Financial Standards Authority. I would be absolutely fucking livid if a company tried that with me.

I had a policy with bennets that ended in 2004, i sold my bike and phoned them for a quote for a new bike....MCE turned out cheapest at the time and i told bennets to cancel my current one as i dont have the bike and i told them i had a new one, they said either we insure your new one £1600+ or pay a cancellation fee £100 and odd.
I laughed at the lad and told him to stop being silly, he just said no really thats our policy, i told him to get fucked hung up and redialled. I got told the same thing from another woman and she was reluctant to help. I redialled once more and got through to a lovely lass (she sounded hot too Smile ) and she said that they as a company have no earthly rights to do this and she will complain on my behalf about the last two i spoke to, because she had to deal with it. She cancelled with immediate effect and they never took another penny Exclamation I wish i could have taken her for a drink

I'd wouldn't use Bennets for my bike insurance again, they are generally expensive and incompetent. I've had loads of hassle with paperwork with them and found their customer service to be appalling. I've had one department trying to blame the other, etc, even down to blaming the post room. Could I care less? I just want my fucking insurance!

the woman i spoke to said "its not our fault you haven't received the renewal letter, we did send it out on the 29th december!!!"

i just said yeah whatever - and in my complaint letter i have said that no response from the letter at least deserves a courtesy phone call to see if you got the letter and to notify that the insurance will end when it expires on the so said date.

they take phone numbers, it isn't hard is it!!!

I don't actually mind them doing this as after ringing around for years for a cheaper quote, it's normally the same company time and again that's cheapest for me.

So if they just carry on, it means I don't have to try and organise new insurance or more importantly speak to anyone about it for years. Very Happy

Insurance folk seem to love renewing your policy and telling you after the fact; I had exactly the same problem with "Orange Care" (when I first signed up, I was young and needed the, err, sobriety, probably); Endsleigh did much the same for home contents at one point. Never rely on them to do the thing that'll cost you less money, is my thinking to this day Evil or Very Mad

Well I called up MCE yesterday to get the Triumph removed from my policy to add the Buell.

They said "What kind of bike is it?"

I said Buell XB12R Firebolt.

She said :"We can't find your bike on the system. Are you sure you don't mean XB12S?"

I said no its deffo an XB12R

She said "I'll have to cancel the policy and start afresh. A new policy will cost £650. This is because your current insurer haven't heard of the bike."

I said.. errrrr. I'll call you tomorrow when I get the new bike.

So I went home from work and was upset. I thought I'd get a few online quotes as ammo against this high premium. Out of interest I got a quote from MCE. I looked at their dropdown menus.

Menu 1: Manufacturer (Buell

Menu 2 Model : XB9R, XB9S, XB12S, XB12X, Firebolt, BLAST!

err
hold on. My bike is a Firebolt . Its an XB12R Firebolt, but a firebolt nonetheless. So I clicked Firebolt, and Lo and Behold...?

Menu 3 type: XB12R

WTF?

anyway. I called back MCE and this time I told them it was a Firebolt XB12R rather than an XB12R Firebolt.

They said: We can change your existing policy. That will be £48 please.

Bastards. Thick as anything.

Personally I dont think its a big issue and def not one thats only related to insurance companies.
My internet provider does it, mobile phone, health care, and the list goes on. Once the contract time is up they will continue on billing and providing the service until advised otherwise.

My policy does state this and luckily enough it wasnt in small writting. So I was well aware. I tend to think it's a good thing as apposed to a bad thing.

Being a manager in a call centre. Anytime I need to contact one to make adjustments or cancellations I will take down the persons name, office theyre in and the date/time.
We often get people who wish to make a complaint or have an issue to sort out but when you ask them who they spoke to and when they called, they say "dunno and it was about 2 weeks ago or so" then it makes it really hard to help even if you wanted to.

Or as we send out peoples flight details on email after they create a booking and then they call back 6 months down the track to advise it was booked wrong. When asked why they didnt call earlier they say that they got the email but didnt check it ( who reads them anyway??) . Im always too happy to tell them thats why we send them and if you had of checked and called back right away I wouldnt be charging you the fee to change it.

I know you dont read everything they send you but fees and renewal details are something you should read at the very least on every contract. So you dont get nasty surprises like this one.

At some point you need to help yourself out on this one.

I would think it's an admin' issue on the part of the Ins. Co. rather than sneakie bast*rd tactics to get premiums.
But we all need to be vigilant.
