This may sound a bit morbid but a few weeks ago I got thinking about rideouts and who you normally go out for blasts with. Sometimes its just a bunch of local lads (or lasses) that you happen to know through biking, but mostly (for me anyway) its normally me and my best mate.

A thought keeps crossing my mind that if anything bad (touch wood) is to happen to my mate then the first person on the scene is going to me. Thats slightly worrying.

Due to my job I am a trained first aider but to be honest I would go to pieces having to help someone close to me through a critical time waiting for an ambulance. Have any of you ever thought of this? If so how many of you are actually trained to deal with this sort of thing?

Just a weirf thought I had Confused

Wink

I have actually thought about this and have applied to go on a two day first aid course through work.

Don't know if it would be any use but my theory is that it can't do any harm and one day I might be extremely grateful for going on it.

I went on a rideout and my mate binned it about 10 meters in front of me. Was difficult not going into the back of him, but as it was dusk the showers of sparks didn't half look impressive Laughing .

We picked his bike up and checked the damage and an off duty copper turned up on his firestorm and directed traffic around us Cool Thumbs Up .

This is a thought I have had for a while too and I have had a look online for places that would do some sort of course that would be related but could not find anything that would be of much help, just overall first aid courses.

I was thinking about doing one of the many advanced riders course that are about and maybe asking on one of these courses about it and getting general riding tips as apposed to being taught how to pass your test (if you know what I mean).

If anyone has got any more info on decent courses/training I would be very grateful as I would hate to feel as if I didn't do everything I could if I ended up in that sort of situation.

I wouldn't expect anyone to remember the thread TBH, I just thought you might be interested in it seeing as you asked a very similar question Smile

Yeah I know, I kinda bolted the first aid bit on the end to fill space though, I was more getting at the whole watching your best mate dissappear through a hedge aspect, but not in the seemingly funny way! Smile

i havent really been riding with anyone as yet since i've only just passed my test but i do have a first aid certificate and although it'd be a bit harrowing to be in that position of having to give potentially life saving support to a friend i certainly feel better for having the training to deal with it.

they do say that first aid is just the act of keeping the person comfortable and preventing their injuries from becoming worse whilst waiting for the emergency services and that in itself can be the lifesaver.

We've done a basic first aid course at work last year, and been told that there's a more advanced one available later this year.

Still not 100% sure if I'd be able to put the training into practice in an emergency though

My m8 had a tiny off ( he went to fast round a courner, went down a ditch and threw a thick hedge, all i saw was him heading for a tree at about 50 mph and im sure if he had hit that tree he wouldnt of walked away, I rounded the bend and stopped safely, then looked behind me, I heard nothing, his engine cut off and so I rather faintly walked over the expecting the worse.

Luckily he was alright, he missed the tree by inchs and did walk away, but I dont think I woulda coped that well if he had hit the tree...

I have thought about it, I've done some basic first aind training specifically aimed at bikers when I did a day of marshall training, whether I could use that after seeing a friend go down is a different matter.

I would prefer to go down with biker friends areound, even if they can't do anything at least they can stop some know nothing wanna be hero from trying to remove my helmet whilst I'm upside down in a bush and risk causing me more injury. Some times doing nothing could be better than doing something.

I think I'd be up for it, however there isn't a great deal of good you can do following a serious accident without any equipment.

I've only been early on the scene once at an accident (young cyclist hit by a car at low speed), but there was some know-it-all GP there who ignored my advice. But I was right. Smile

When I was on the scooter me and a mate were riding around at about 9:30. It was pitch black and my mate had a very dark visor on his helmet.

His scooter was derestricted so it was faster than mine. We were driving down some back road we had never been on before and got onto a hill. He was going down it full speed (near 50) and at the bottom there is a very tight right then left corner.

He's a fair bit ahead of me and all I see is his tail light darken into nothing. Needless to say he didnt see the warning sign and went straight into a ditch. It was a lot of nettles, bumpy mud, exercise bike and a gate.

As soon as I saw the light go out I knew what had happened straight away. Quite horrible having to run into a ditch in the pitch dark trying to find your friend by his screams alone.

Got to the ditch, he was lying there moving a bit. His visor was gone, helmet pretty bashed up. I got him to the side of the road and got his helmet off. He wasn't in good shape.

Neither of us had a phone on us and I didn't have a clue where we were. Ended up digging his scooter out of the ditch to see if it would go. He said he was able to ride it so after a while we got going. We were about 4/5 miles from his house driving at 15mph, me constantly checking my mirrors to make sure he was alright. He looked like he was really pissed.

Got back to his safely and got his mum and step dad. Mums a nurse, dads a biker. Got an ambulance round and off to hospital he went.

He suffered 2 broken ribs, punctured lung, tendons in his leg were torn and other things I'm sure.

Not a great night but a learning experience anyway.

Don't ride with a really black visor at night. Karma

i work with the ambulance service down my way. best advice i can give is the good old DR ABC
danger (yours and theirs), response, airway, breathing circulation. call for help ist then keep on going through these till the emergency services arrive - thats all anyone can do without an ambulance full of kit!

Ive always thought i would end up being the one shouting at people to leave the fucking helmet on, and growling at the other driver.

I remember when i binned it infront of my mate stu (not serious), he ran off and sorted out my bike while i scraped myself up. He then buggered off to find bodging materials etc.

Legend.

But yeh if i went down, and i was in a group of 3, id be abit miffed 3 stayed to help me and no-one chased up the driver that offed me (if it was there fault).

well i have come off once infront of a friend, (seriously anyway) and i had come off at 80mph, stupidly in a t-shirt, i just got up and asked him to pick my bike up as my arm was a bit cut and i broke my wrist. the kind fella went and got my mam who took me to hospital .. its all good, i'd really be screwed without my mates. I came off on my own another time at similiar speed and got a lift home off a random car driver, my mate the absolute legend as soon as he heard he went straight over, jumped on the bike, started it up and rode it home with no gear lever or clutch lever (god knows how), even after the front wheel had misterously locked up at 75ish. brilliant when you have someone out there who will help you in those kind of situations. I was busy in hospital on the bed getting my knee scraped out Thumbs Up

yeah ive thought about that!

and my mates are in the same boat as we have spoke about it! Heres another thought, we all wanted those intercoms thought it would be a laugh wizzing passed and taking the piss etc and i put everyone off the idea in a quick simple way......what if someone had an accident i said you would hear everything i would hate to hear my mate screaming in agony or worse dieing you wouldnt be able to stop the bike, remove helmet quick enough for it to scar you for life!!

i will never have voice activated intercom and neither will my mates now! bah!
