I want to get a service done on my new bike. I got a quote of £150 for service which includes:
Oil
Oil filter
Airfilter
Spark plugs
also they mentioned about cleaning the carbs but not sure if thats extra (need to confirm)

Right I know you will say do it yourself, I know I could do it as I have done it on my old Honda 125 4 stroke but being a new bike to me I would like someone who knows what they are doing to do it. Also I think an extra stamp in the service book would be good.

Is it too expensive? or about right?

Thanks in advance

i know you don't want to hear this but DO IT YOURSELF!

Even if it is a new bike to you, doing the things mentioned is very simple indeed!

I did the exact same type of service on my bike a few weeks ago and the bits cost under £30 and it took less than an hour.

Replacing plugs, very simple - Remove fairing (if applicable), remove old plug, replace with new one, rinse and repeat.

Remove old oil - Make sure engine is warm, locate sump plug. Remove sump plug carefully and catch old oil in suitable reciptical. Replace sump plug (and washer if applicable).

Oil Filter - Locate old oil filter, unscrew and have something to catch any dribbles of oil, get new oil filter, offer the top of it up to the old one to rub a bit of oil on the top seal, screw on to bike (not too tight!).

New oil - Add correct amount of oil as per handbook, run engine for few minutes, let oil settle, check oil level in viewing window/dipstick, add more if necessary.

Air filter - locate air box, remove any screws holding lid on, remove old air filter, insert new one, replace lid.

Job done and £120 saved!

Quick question:
When buying spark plugs do they come with the correct gap or does this need to be set?

They should do, but it's worth getting a set of feeler gauges and checking before you chuck them in.

Yes the price is about right,

however I'd advise doing it your self,

give you a chance to look over your new bike while the oil drains you may notice something which needs adjusting or putting on properly etc before something goes wrong,

If I hadnt done the oil change on the GPZ when I got it back from restriction I wouldn't have notived the gimp had left the gear box breather off and not put the carb back on properly.. lovely eh?

Prime example why my bike's NEVER go to a garage. You pay these twats money and they still mess it up.

Wan't allowed to fit restrictors my self, stupid bloody laws, all geared to get the most money out of you whatever.

Normally do all my own work had the valves done last time when it had new tyres fitted.

would attempt almost anything armed with a manual and having spoken with a mech at a dealership. (alf englands usually give you a print out of their manual if you ask about something )

not all mechs are bad but they are all expensive.

I know what you mean about not having your own garage Sad

I don't have to work in the street though, we have a private carpark so if its nice outside its not too bad.

Thats why its tempting to hand over £150 and be done with it Laughing

Right I am doing it myself.

The weather is so crap so have stopped.
So far I have taken out old spark plugs and put new ones in.
Drained old oil (haven't put new in yet)
New oil filter
Taken the battery out and is on charge

What I need to do when its nicer weather:
Put oil in
Air filter
Drain old fuel from tank
Drain fuel from carbs maybe clean them depending on condition
Add new fuel
I bought so carb cleaner additive so add that to fuel
Put battery back in
Put grease everywhere

Slowly getting there just weather thats holding me back Sad

well If i fit them they are not valid, not so much law as FI international rules of fitment.. got to be an approved fitter/dealer to get the certificate..

Not really. Put the washers in and then dyno it to show 33bhp. That's perfectly legal and saves alot of money.

Thumbs Up Smile

So what you're saying is its not law but if you don't have a cert its not a legal restriction?

I say you're best learning to do all that yourself. You're going to have to change the oil and the filters quite often anyway so it'll save you a lot of money.

There's not exactly much to go wrong. Heard of someone having their oil filter in backwards though, I'd try not to do that.

great advice!.... 7months ago. Rolling Eyes

I was at the time under the impression it had to be done by a 'proffesional' I could have had the washers or a diff way by dyno torque, cheapest was the washers...
