I think it's a sump plug. But isn't all oil shared in a 4 stroke, so not just gearbox oil?
Could be wrong though

According to the fiche on https://www.buykawasaki.com/Default.asp? it's a 'Plug, main gallery'

What this means is, when they machine the crankcases they have to have holes in the inside for the oil to flow through, but you can't drill a hole from half-way.

So they drill it all the way through and then fit a plug like this to stop the oil squirting out all over your right foot Thumbs Up

Yup, what he said, It's the seal for the main oil gallery, WTF did you try to remove it for???
The bike is now grounded until you find a replacement, probably free or a quid at most from any salvage yard... but make sure ya get one from another Kaw 500...(or whatever that is)

It was already posted: "Plug, main gallery". Just explain where it goes/what it does over the phone & anyone with half a brain (the usual IQ requirement for employment in salvage yards) will know what it is.

It's sump plug.

Never mind what the manual says, call it a 'sump plug' or you'll get funny looks. Take the old one with you. Very Happy

It should be a blind hole (ie, doesn't actually go anywhere). If thats the case you could put a bolt in there but use a copper crush washer to seal it otherwise you'l have oil spraying all over.

I've got a few of the correct bolts sitting in my garage, but I'm 6500 miles away..

It is not a sump plug, but it does have a function. That one is there for an engineer to remove and screw an oil pressure guage into to check the oil pump is functioning properly.

You wanted the sump plug which is located (surprisingly) in the sump as opposed to the side of the crankcase. It is underneath the bike, near the front.

Now give yourself a slap alongside the head for unscrewing bits off your bike when you don't know what they are and what they do.

In my Kawasaki workshop manual it is called an "Oil passage plug".

Yopu need to replace it with the correct one, should be hollow with a hole in it like a brake banjo bolt and has an o-ring under it. DO NOT replace it with an ordinary bolt or you will interfere with the oil flow to your engine.

On some the hole is blind, so oil doesn't actually go anywhere via the bolt/plug. Thats why I said "IF" it's a blind hole, a normal bolt & copper crush washer will be ok for while Smile

Just as a side note, the sump plug on a Honda Bros is located in the side, about where this oil passage flow plug is. It's designed so that you drain the oil on the side stand.

I can see it wouldn't be too hard for someone inexperienced to get confused.
