I wanted to find out amongst you all if anybody ever had the mishap of dropping the bike, and how did you get the bike back up again?

Bearing in mind that some motorcycles do weigh up to 360 kilos this could not be an easy task to say the least!

Were you by yourself, did you get help from somebody in helping you to lift it,

What do you do if nobody else is around in the middle of nowhere?

What did you do?

Shocked yeah, but you take the passenger out the side-car before trying to lift it Wink

My XJ600 probably weights about 190kg. I've dropped it and had no problems picking it back up at all. Crouch down, turn the bars to full lock, get your hip against it, and use your legs Thumbs Up

As said, use your legs (anyone whos done any job will have been taught to lift loads with your legs) leg muscles are the bigest in the body for good reason Wink

Its not only the weight its the weight distrobution.. a top heavy bike is a bit harder work..

But then Honda thought of that and was smart in that the Gold wing can pick itself up if you turn the bars and push a little using the reverse gear.

I managed to lift my FJR back up after it fell directly on my legs.

I kicked the sidestand the wrong way and it just fell on me.
Sat on the floor with 200kg+ of bike resting on my boots.

Not too hard to pick back up, if your not a complete weakling.

its about technique not brute strength , that UK woman weightlifter who went to the last Olympics wasn't too beefy.

And in my previous job I could shift a pallet on a little pump truck weighing 3 tons.

I crouched by the side with the bars, held onto the the handlebar nearest the floor which was turnd in next to the bike, and straghtened my legs. When it was most of the way up, my hands moved to underneath the tank and i pushed it up the last bit of the way.

I think adrenalin flowing from the off helped.

You are not actually lifting 170kg or whatever, as a lot of weight is supported by the wheels which are resting on the ground. Initially you are supporting quite a lot of the weight, but as you lift, more of the weight is supported by the wheels, until its vertical and then its all supported by the wheels.

Lean down, put hands on handle bars, lift. Your bike is now the correct way up. Works with mine, but then my bike does only weight like 100kg Laughing

Hi,

Take off hemlet, smile, watch several men struggle to pick it up.... works nearly every time Very Happy.

On my own put the steering lock on an lift (put its only a GPZ or AF1) I have tried this with I think with the anything heavier I would have to wait for plan 1 to work.

Regards
C

Dropped an old gsxr1100 at work, i am not hugely built as some of you may know (5'8") picked it up no probs.

Just bend ur legs next to it, grab it and lift up using your legs.

I've got no upper body strength, despite my size, I'm as weak as a kitten, so ...

I just cry a bit, or maybe look girlie and helpless.
Usually some bloke comes along and picks it up for me.

*shrugs*

Doesnt always work, my girlfriend dropped her bike on the ice around the corner. early morning in the middle of the road, some guy walks past with his dog, theres another guy about 2m away de-icing his car!! no-one offered. I had to run all the way around the corner to pick it up. Neutral

Twisted Evil Don't take this the wrong way, may be it was the erection that pushed the bike up that you got when the two women came over to "lift it"? Twisted Evil

I had a bit of an off in December last year, I just got up and picked it up! I think it was the adrenaline doing the work though because the next day my arms were aching like hell! Think I pulled a muscle picking it up too fast Embarassed Rolling Eyes .

The other time I had to pick it up was when I left it in the school car park at night (was doing an all night charity football event!) and some chav had came over and taken it off the stand just to knock it over! Evil or Very Mad . I was really pissed off and ended up picking it up on the opposite side of the stand, then letting go once I had it vertical only for it to fall onto the other side because the stand was still down Embarassed . The second time pulling it up seemed a lot harder! I'm 6'1" and built like a ... rake! Razz .

Bloke dropped his 'storm right in front of me at Snett and looked mortified when I ran over to help him lift it back up. Laughing

Personally, I'd go with the 'backwards lift with your legs' method if it came down to it, but the only time I've ever dropped it on the road the guys had her back on her wheels before I'd even extricated myself from underneath.

If lifting by myself failed, I'd just accost someone and get them to help me, they might not run to help initially but I'm sure if you asked most people wouldn't mind. Or am I being to optimistic?
