See My Comments in the Cant Find Neutral Thread.
Cruisers DONT make the 'best' newbie mounts. The laid-back riding possition and lazy geometry dont offer the best control over the bike, when you are learning.
If your sister is of shorter stature, and anything under about 5'82 may qualify here, the high wide bars and forwards controls can negate any advantage from the low seat hight, spreading shorter arms and legs out like a human parachute, again, making them cumbersome, debnying control, and in some cases, like Snowtigeress's, the erganomics can be counter-productive and actually make the bike even harder to control and balence.
This is NOT good stuff for a newbie to have to get to grips with, on top of learning the basics, AND tackling modern roads.
Next up, cruisers tend to be heavy and slow. And Learner-Legals are slow to begin with, Chinese ones even more so!
The added weight and less than enthusiastic engine dont add up to much by way of response, which again deadens a lot of control.... as well as makes them a pain to keep up with, let alone weave through traffic.
If she's old enough to have a 125.... she might as well get a car.... would keep up with traffic, be more manouverable, and has a heater!
I REALLY dont rate Learner-Legal Cruisers..... Its just far too compromised a design... on a full size one... well, speed control and manouverability still aren't exactly thier forte, but at least they tend to have enough power that they CAN put on some spurt of acceleration when needed......
She would be FAR better off on a commuter style 125, like a CG or YBR, though money & mouth, for Snowtigeress, I stumped up the dosh for her to get a Honda-Superdream..... worth a look, if you want to show her some pics, you can get a pretty good one for around £500, and they look much more like a big-bike, go faster, and are more comfortable than a CG.
If you REALLY cant convince her, the 'compromise' is the Yamaha SR125, or the Honda CM125. CM125's are a bit long in the tooth now, and still a bit heavy, but not AS heavy as most of the modern over-chromed cruisers, nor as commited in the geometry department. And they have the bonus of the old CB125 Twin engine, that has a little more beef about it, though on a single carb, not much more!
The Yamaha SR, bargain of the decade, they are like marmite! People love-em or they hate-em. Basically a YBR with high-bars and stepped seat, they are what twenty five years ago was called a 'factory-custom', precursor of the 'propper' cruiser.
But, they still have reletively concervative and nimble geometry and aren't lugging too much excess chrome, sorry weight, about, and they make for a much more nimble and far less cumbersome ride...... though I suspect that the 'looks' here are by far the most important aspect of the bike..... and the SR probably doesn't quite have the full 'Wurlitzer on wheels' miniature Harley appeal.....
End of the day, though SHE is the one that has to ride the damn thing..........
And if she thinks it looks a pig, she wont be thrilled to ride it....... But, better unthrilled and unkilled, me-thinks!
If she REALLY wants a cruiser..... well, PERSONALLY, I'd work on selling her on a 'real' harley or propper big-bike cruiser, and showing her pictures and prices of 883 sportsters and stuff, and telling her that IF that's the kind of bike she REALLY wants, fine...... get one, but AFTER she has got her full licence.
Here and now, a 125 is just a means to an end, and she can get a propper Harley for a couple of grand, if she really wants one, about 2/3 the price of a brand-new Shaddow or eliminator, sort of money that would get her a 2nd hand 125 Cruiser (worth having) would buy her a decent 535 Virago or the like.
If she buys a 125 Cruiser, she's making life hard for herself getting her test done, and cruisers dont sell as easily or for as good money as 'commuter' 125's.... SO if she REALLY wants a cruiser... buy a more useful commuter 125, SIMPLY as a stepping stone. Get training & test out the way on it as quickly as possible, sell it for nie on what she paid for it, and use the money to buy a cruiser worth having, that DOESN'T have to be paraded infront of a Driving Examiner to demonstrate feats of control, and which will at least have some added 'oomph' about it when needed. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

No matter what she gets, tell her NOT to get one of those things. They're slow, they're REALLY heavy for 125's, REALLY awkward to control, can't lean around corners which is a MASSIVE problem because with it being a heavy 125, you can't accelerate back up to speed with much ease, they're HELL to work on, the sump plug is in an arse scratchingly, grape crushingly awkward place to get to and support for them is very difficult. if she wants real cheap, reliable and new, Huonaio HN125, at least have a look at them. they're piss easy to ride and handle, they're built very well for the price, they're 95% of what a jap bike is but at half the price, REALLY easy to work on, give about 130mpg and they sound like a 400 if you're sticking jap, maurauder. ____________________ 57 Huoniao HN125-8 - , 97 Kawasaki GPZ500S -

The honda rebel was always a pretty well put together 125 cruiser. Not too "full-on" in terms of riding position either.
Some of the more recent Japanese ones are just WAY too big and heavy (eg. Honda shadow, Yamaha drag star).
One plus side of buying a cruiser type 125 is they haven't usually been owned by a spotty 17 year old oik and spent their entire life being ridden in circles round the town square on the rev limiter, being dropped and being subjected to inept attempts at tuning them. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. I've ridden a Drag Star and it handles its weight very well. Very easy to ride around town etc and comfortable.
What I didn't like at all was the handling at speed. I don't know if it's because of the rake angle or what it is but you have to lean it right over to go round corners on A-roads.
Also this probably won't matter so much for your sister but it was pretty gutless. I picked up a H100 a few weeks ago and it's much quicker with a similar top speed. ____________________ H100 Breaking for spares |
