This will mostly be a tale of frustration and spiralling costs, although I am trying to keep the costs down as much as possible.
It started with my first bike bike, the Yamaha Thundercat YZF600R and ended with two crashes a bus crushing the remains being stolen, abandoned and recovered.
It started out its life with me looking like this

https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/4893af6e.jpg

but unfortunately that did not last....

gradually I modified the bike with precision and a delicate, almost fine art aesthetic

The bike has currently been sitting in a garden untouched for a year and a half so I guess the time has finally come to do something with it. I am not going to get fairings back on it as the value of the bike hardly warrants even a 350 quid set of chinese plastics, so post crash naked it is Thumbs Up
So far in the last couple of days I have managed to get it to start by fixing some wiring that appeared to have been chewed and hooking up the battery from the zx6r
She lives!
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/th_video-2012-06-09-18-46-17.jpg
Not sure my inlaws neighbours were loving the un silenced goodness but who cares!
P.S the smoke coming off the front end is some oil I rubbed on the headers and exhaust studs a year ago when I realised that it might be there a while, is it bad that a spray of black/brown water came out when it finally started?!

Fuck it, I just wrote loads and it disappeared so you are gonna get a cut down version,
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/2012-06-09192134.jpg
spare fzr yokes/risers sprayed badly with left over high temp paint and matt lacquer. Renthal ultra lows on the way from busters.
Carbon stubby and link pipe on the way from ebay as my link pipe was kindly crushed by an altogether sepearate bus than the one that ran me over Thumbs Up
received a twin square headlight off ebay as seen on CHR15's old bike.

need to decide on colour scheme, current favourites are matt metallic orange frame with orange pinstripes on white bodywork or gloss black with matt gold detailing. Any photo-shops or suggestions welcome.

Pondering making a one off tail fairing utilising the stock comfy twin seat but reducing lardyness and massive boat sized under tray.
Also need to make some sort of new ram air scoops to replace the ridiculous looking oem system hidden away under the fairings. All examples of un faired cats I've seen seem to be in AUS or US where covering your gaping hole with a bit of foam or grill to keep insects/kangaroos/bears out is fine. However I have a feeling that high speed ramming of murky English rain into your engine is not entirely desirable.

Also forgot to mention that removing locks from the old yoke was an absolute nightmare of a long arsed grinding session last night. Had I known it would take this long I would have just drilled holes in my own yoke instead of keeping it in case i want to go back to clip ons.
However, I cleaned up the ignition and used a pendant drill to polish out the scratches in the plastic round the keyhole so that the text could be read again.

happy delivery day!

although the stator cover will need a fair bit of work as its been badly welded by its previous owner but is still in less pieces than mine!

so that stator cover......
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/2012-06-15020554.jpg
the surface of this cover was all over the place so first i filed it over the surface of the metal to find the high and low spots
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/2012-06-15020911.jpg
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/2012-06-15020924.jpg
and revealed a fair bit of damage at the bottom edge where someone's attempt at a weld up had clearly failed.
Lots more filing and sanding followed.
then some more......
I then used about 2cm of a roll of epoxy metal putty to fill the low points and missing bits of the cover.
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/2012-06-15023636.jpg
more filing and sanding followed...
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/2012-06-15031656.jpg
then some more..
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/2012-06-15032640.jpg
when I had sufficiently flatted it out and filed back in the original contours I used rattle can primer
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/2012-06-15040158.jpg
then silver stove paint
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/2012-06-15040443.jpg
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/2012-06-15040455.jpg
then enamel clear coat
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/2012-06-15042237.jpg
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/2012-06-15042254.jpg
The finish is reasonable considering I couldn't be arsed to sand between coats etc. but I shall be hopefully taking a more serious approach when I take on the bodywork.

update.....

seeing as we were graced with an evenings worth of fine British summer yesterday I thought I would get off my arse and do something with the cat.
Having never stripped a big bike before I'm a little nervous so everything is being labelled and parts and bolts are going into pots with labels on so hopefully when it comes to putting it all back together again I may have a chance of doing it correctly.
First issue was taking the headers off..
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/2012-07-15191926.jpg
nuts were rusted up a treat and two studs snapped during removal Sad
any advice regarding that situation welcome.

also noticed the radiator has a fair sized ding in it but no leaks

NEW PLAN..... as of today I have taken tenancy of a GARAGE
Dance!
so as the bike comes apart it will be transported in the car to its new safe haven where I can work in the dry at night with lights Mr. Green

also apologies for some of the more boring pics, its more reference material for me than anything

Hi with the broken studs are they sticking out far from the head? if so you could use a stud extractor to remove them but I would recommend that you lubricate and leave them for a few days while spraying them once in a while with WD40,plus gas or the stuff I generally use at work called rusty penetrant which is really good. Your cat looks really good naked like someone else said it reminds you of the speed four

wd40.. and leave it to soak for days !

I snapped one on the duke a few weeks ago changing a gasket, if you take a socket which is smaller then the threads of the studs (if you got enough bite on it) smash the socket on to the stud and then slowly ratchet it out...only after soaking the studs for yonks, maybe even heating it up a bit to help it...
Go easy otherwise its drill,easy-outs or re-tap :/

update:

surprisingly other than the header studs, everything else on the bike has come apart with no issues or damage Thumbs Up

handy plant pot was just the right height to support the bike along with axle stands for removing the front end and rear wheel, not sure how my mother in law will feel about this but its too late for regrets.
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/2012-07-22193122.jpg
swing arm pivot and links though looking a tad crusty came apart no hassles
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/2012-07-22193127.jpg
shock looks rough but will have to do until funds allow for an upgrade

dog not interested in project
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/2012-07-25172558.jpg
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/2012-07-25172623.jpg
found out that I didn't have a 22mm socket so the frame and swing arm stayed together for a bit
https://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab349/slyrob/2012-07-25172627.jpg
And although not as impressive as other 'bike in a car' images found on this site, I was still happy with the results!

and so the project moves to its new indoor home........

why? surely as a fellow thundercat owner its nice to see a cat destined for the breakers make a last gasp bid for a new life on the road!
And steveh, possible interest in the dog bones what's the height raised by with them? As I can flat foot the thundercat from the pillion seat!!

the main parts of the bike look pretty clean & in good condition, a good basis for a streetfighter.

with the 2 snapped exhaust bolts would recommend get a blowtorch onto them, then shifting them with a set of mole grips or simular. they are an absolute pita to get out but you'll get there.
