Went for an eye test today, as I'm planning to go for my bike test soon, and when I did my driving test last year I struggled to read the license plate from 20 metres. Had a chat with the optician who was also a biker of sorts (125 scooter ), he said my eyesight was within the legal limit but I could still benefit from glasses.
So I ordered some, then when I got home looked at my prescription:
SPH: R +0.25, L +0.25
CYL: R 0.75, L 1.00
Erm... doesn't that mean I'm slightly long sighted? But I have no problem seeing things close up (reading etc.)
Also I asked if needed to inform the DVLA that I was wearing glasses, and was told no, as my eyesight meets the legal requirements. So when it comes to my bike test, I'm guessing to not have glasses as a condition of my license, I'll have to squint through the eyesight test then what... put them on after? Or do you have to declare that you wear glasses and have them on for the entire test?
Cheers for any advice ____________________ Yamaha MT-03 '08 (crashed)

Wear glasses for test and when you're riding the bike.
Get used to wearing them beforehand.
They can steam up/mist so visor may be need to be cracked open more than normal. Trick may be to put tie-wrap around chin part to prevent visor closing completely.
For wearing under helmet suggest pair of specs with straight arms. You may need to get used to juggling putting on helmet and then glasses if it is a full face lid. You may find certain makes of full face lid make it eeasier to put glasses on. I know I've had to rule out certain makes as could not get glasses on in comfort.
With the flip-up style helmet you can just keep the glasses on. Although this type are more noisy than full face.
Best of luck with the test. ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

I can't find anywhere that it says that you have to declare that you need corrected vision, other than the driving licence application form. But all it takes is a jobsworth examiner to add it to your pass cert and you would end up with an 01 code.
There must be a box that they tick to confirm an eyesight test has been carried out, does it have a second tick box to confirm if the vision was corrected at this point?
Having an 01 code on your licence is all you need when you have been pulled over by a half awake plod and your not wearing your specs (3 points code, MS70) |

You failed the reading exam.
"You must wear glasses or contact lenses every time you drive if you need them to meet the ‘standards of vision for driving’.
If you need glasses to read the plate at the set distance for a driving test then you NEED to wear them whilst driving.
As if you don't you will possibly misjudge distances and stuff. 57' (65' old) ____________________ W-ireless A-rtificial L-ifeform L-imited to O-bservation P-eacekeeping and E-fficient R-epair |

This clarifies a few things, still doesn't fully answer my question, but it does seem the best plans to try the eyesight without glasses and I guess leave them off throughout. Does seem to be a bit of a grey area, one that's best not to be involved in if it can be avoided. ____________________ Yamaha MT-03 '08 (crashed)

If both plus then yes you are long sighted. You have a bit of astigmatism which can help make letters look better.
It will help relax your eyes too. ____________________ Hit the G spot. |

As above, I'd keep the glasses well out of the way right through the test.
I stupidly did buy glasses when I was first getting a bike because the optician suggested I should - young and naive an' that (actually, they were nice for riding with the visor up.)
Was worried my eye sight wasn't going to be up to scratch for lorry test, so got an eye test. They advised my eyes would be ok to pass the doctor's test, but glasses might be useful anyway.
I got better than 20/20 in the Doctor's eye test! (Surprised me too - some of it was just luck in getting the right letters probably.) |
