hi,
if a bike is fitted with twin headlights, do they BOTH have to work for the MOT?

bike has twin headlights, but its just 1 big unit, with each side separated by a piece of black plastic.
both sides have main/dipped & those wee useless bulbs (T10?) but the glass is cracked on 1 side after a run in with a swan. yes, a f*ckin swan. b*stard nearly killed me with its suicidal tendencies! Shocked

would covering up the broken side be ok?
i was thinking of just taping a piece of black plastic over the one side.

i cut out a template out of cardboard then cut out the shape on thin plastic, the type that ice cream containers are made of.
I then sprayed it black & i could stick it on fairly easy..
i have pulled out the bulbs on the broken side, just in case some light could be seen through my ghetto lense cover.

opinions?
i dont care how it looks, i just want it to pass the MOT.
please dont tell me to buy a new headlight unit, they cost around £150 & have to be ordered & they are like hens teeth 2nd hand.

cheers,
GAZ

I think fitted is the key word here, can you remove the iffy one?
Never mind, just read that with my glasses on,
what you have in mind sounds reasonable, got to be worth a go, I'd get some plain black self adhesive vinyl from eBay
and use that, less of a faff.

With a daylight MOT? hardly worth the hassle from plod and the insurance company, easier just to remove the faulty headlight as only one with both dipped and high beam is required for a proper MOT, costs nothing and is legal.

No such thing as a daylight MOT, you get lights not fitted at time of test, daylight only advisory.

Thats it its a advisory nothing more nothing less.

The same as chain is a bit slack.

A daylight MOT would require a motorbike to have a horn and a rear registration plate.

The testing guidelines state that motorbikes can be exempt from having lamps tested if they meet the following criteria:-

machines which have neither front nor rear position lamps, or have such lamps permanently disconnected, painted over or masked that are:-
only used in daylight hours
not used in times of serious reduced visibility

The following items/lamps are not required to be tested in order for a MOT to pass a daylight MOT test as long as they meet the criteria above.
Front and Rear position lamps
Headlamps
Stop Lamps
Rear Reflectors
Direction Indicators

On a daylight MOT which only permits the bike to used during daylight hours? that would require another full MOT with functioning lights, again much easier and less hassle just to disconnect the faulty light which takes a few seconds to do.

Tape all lights.
Get it passed with lights not fitted.
Remove tape.

It isn't a daytime MOT as SQL says, it'd merely an advisory. You don't get it tested again with advisories. Done it plenty of times and will be doing again for my triples MOT.

Hi,
Just quickly read through the replies so apologies if I have missed or misunderstood anything.
I don't want a "daytime mot" which is just a MOT with an advisory to not use the bike after dark.
I want to be able to use the bike at night.
I also dont want to tape up all indicators etc.

the headlight thats fitted, is a sealed unit. So I cannot remove the broken one or even remove the glass as its not available separately, you must buy the complete unit.
I can pull the harness out of the back so nothing lights up on the broken side.
I was gonna cover up the damaged side with something black so the lense isnt visible on the damaged side.
MOT is due now, so no time to wait on a new headlight unit becoming available.
in past 6 months i think I have seen 3 come up on ebay, at prices very near the rrp of a new one!

cheers,
GAZ

YOU CAN USE IT WHENEVER YOU WANT WITH THE TAPE REMOVED.

HTH.

<helpful> If you are passing it to sell it on, fix it, if you are going to use it then just tape up for the MOT and remove after. You can ride at night. Brick Wall
