Hey,

This is my first post to the forum and would be very grateful if anyone is able to help me out.

I have just purchased a 1988 Suzuki GP100 and has been sat for at least 2 years from what I understand.

When attempting to start the engine there is no spark.

I have taken the HT lead out and replaced the spark plug but each time I kick the engine over there is no spark. The very, very odd occasion I do see a spark but it is very weak.

Any suggestions as to what I can do?

Thanks!

I've checked the plug and points. Does the gp100 require a battery at all? I have made the assumption it doesn't need a battery for the engine to run.

Will have to check the other items.

Just frustrating as I get the occassional spark but it's very weak.

No ignition light means circuit not complete = no spark .
I`m surprised that if you have no battery in and no ignition light on, that you`re getting a spark at all?

Want I am trying to understand is, does the gp 100 require a battery as part of the kick start.

I'm led to believe that you don't which is what I want to confirm. There will be no ignition light with this bike due to the nature.

A gp100 should run without a battery with the ignition on.spray some WD 40 inside the flywheel around the points . wood ruff key maybe worn. clean the points.

Indeed. The battery is a only a small reservoir for running lights/indicators at low revs (stopped at junction etc..) Ignition circuit is separate and uses separate source coil. Deffo check or better still replace points maybe also condenser. Then if all else fails new coil.

Absolute newbie when it comes to bikes.

What is the Woodruff key and its purpose?

Shall try some wd40 in the flywheel.

Cheers

Are the faces of the points clean of dirt and corrosion,, free from oil or grease (or WD40) and set to the correct gap when fully open?

Woodruff key locates the 'flywheel' magneto thingy onto teh crankshaft accurately. As menstioned unless it's damp WD40 might hinder more than help.

IIRC the low-tension timing signal/wire is black and yellow coming from the magneto. If you get someone to hold this close to the frame or other earthing point and kick over the engine you should see some evidence of electricity (sparks) - if not then you have a problem with points of source coil.

Yup sounds like the usual points+ condenser need cleaning/replacing after not being used for a while
