PostPosted: 15:16 - 28 Jun 2006    Post subject: Is my CV any good?? Reply with quote

Hey,

Im starting to look for a admin job in a office, you know the sort of job where sort out stuff in a office and keep databases organised etc. Ive done my CV but not sure if its good enough Confused .

I think i need to include more about my IT skills as this will be needed to get employers interested in me i think.

Obviously taken my personal details out but they are included in the real CV (just incase you thought they werent!!)

Any comments (constructive only) welcome Thumbs Up

I've always been told not to include your DOB or age on your CV/application, as some employers can discriminate against the young, thus throwing their application into the bin without further consideration. Only when they ask, do you give it to them.

That's cool that you're going to a Bath uni - I've just finished at Bath Spa, having lived in Bath all my life Thumbs Up

Also, put on that you have a full UK motorcycle (+ car?) driving license - as this shows that you are mobile.

Well to be honest, some people will tell you that it needs to be included - but if you're a good enough candidate, age should not make any difference. I've never included it - and have had good feedback from my applications. Then again, as a recent graduate, they can always make a fairly reliable assumption...

I know how you feel by the way, I'm job hunting at the moment and have already had one interview, waiting for another, and have sent off a few other applications.

put all personal info, inc name and address at the very end.

put the important stuff at the top.

Don't want to get sidelined cos they think you're

too old
too young
too far away
from the wrong side of town

let them see WHAT you can do and Who you are, and then (hopefully) they will ignore such details as age and location.

Elaborate more on your skills (definately more on your IT experience too), and chop down the last part (aditional information).

You've got these two mixed up. You want to tell potential empolyers more about what your abilities are, not how much of a swat Wink you were at school.

Loose the boxes.

I always put my age on, and the fact I'm married with kid, I believe it show's commitment.

Another tip. Apply for as many jobs as you can, not just the odd ones you like the look of, even if the job is crap and naff pay, it will give you more options and experience of what to expect in interviews, and more confidence. Its also quite good to turn down jobs too (ie: the naff ones).

Thumbs Up

Edit: Also, save it as a PDF, looks much better than a word doc. Thumbs Up

Doesnt make sense and the reader probably is'nt interested in your opinions.

Sorry if thats a bit harsh mate, but I do read through cv's and with the amount you can recieve for one post the slightest things will cost you an interview invatation.

So i shouldnt mention my achievements at all?? Its only 1 1/2 pages and thought that its on the short side, do you think id benefit out of taking that section out. I know its all "up my own arse" talk and saying how great i am but though it should my point about put full effort into what i do Thumbs Up

Please advise me as to if i should get rid!!

How should it set it out?? do you have an example you could PM me??
This was what my college told me to do and said how great it is set out like this. Confused

Feef wrote:

Is there anychance one of you guys could set it out how you think it should be (ie without boxes and in order you recommend) as you all seem to have more knowledge of CV's than me and think if i have a bad CV im going to be at a disadvantage. Would be appriated or at least guidelines of how it should be set out.

A CV should be 2 pages - so use all the space possible for your maximum benefit. Although advice given over an Internet forum is useful, I'd suggest that you do not adhere to it slavishly. While some people hate boxes on a CV, others would appreciate them. While some people like the use of the Arial font, others prefer Times New Roman. While some people prefer titles and subtitles, others may prefer lists and tables. While some people like justified text, others hate it...

I could go on...

Put a footer on each page, that includes your name, and Page X of Y.

I think it's important not to go into too much detail on your CV, as it gives you little scope for elaboration during the interview.
