UPDATE: Have a document checking session 28th June

Hi,

Since i have been back from uni i have been working part time at a pub and have become more overdrawn than i thought i would Rolling Eyes and need more hours and i just cant get these in my current job (being seasonal, everyone full-time get the hours they need first)

Now, i have been thinking a lot about possible jobs i could also do to increase my income. Which has brought me to postman.

I quite enjoy walking and want to do some gental excerise over summer so think this would be really good for me. I would struggle with early mornings but my GF works at a newsagent and gets up for work at 6am which would give me some motivations (though we don't currently live together)

There are 3 postman positions within 25miles of me (i use to lifeguard 25miles away and quite enjoyed the ride there, even in winter) and think i would look ok for the job.

Now, my question is what's the best way to go about this?? I am here for 4 months and then back to uni, will this mean i will be turned down for the job? Would it be a possibility not mention uni and just leave after 4 months??

Thanks in advance Thumbs Up

I'd do that. If a company you worked for didn't want you any more, they would have no hesitation in getting rid of you. Why cant you do it to them!

Thumbs Up

Hi

I would be honest about it as they do employ posties to cover busy periods and it could mean you have regular holiday work (christmas etc). You might want a reference later and its bound to come up when you say you have done a year at uni, you will either have to admit to wanting a summer job or say you have dropped out which wont look good.

Regards
Charlotte

Yea this is a good point, but at the same time i need the money and getting another bar job just sounds even worse.

I hope to get a summer placement with my course after year 2. We have to sort out year 4 placements by end of year told (so im told) so this could help get one. Im not bothered about earning more per hour but have a job that i want to go to.

I also should be having a bone graft on my arm in December so wont be working at all which is a shame but just one of those things. But if all goes to plan then i will only be this summer i looking for un-skilled work (this is an optimistic but i think having a high goal is important).

This would mean (assuming my plan actually worked) that i would only need this job for summer. I know its dishonested but they just dont seem to want temporary staff

I did postie work all the way thru uni. Loved it. If you have the chance, then do it. Yes it means early morinings, but the rest of the day is yours, and because you're temp, you don't have to deal with all the full timers politics.

Do it. Early morning on an empty street is just lovely.....

Andy...

You're going to be on your feet for a good few hours a day, You'll be carrying a postbag (which I hear is up to 25 kilos in weight.) Is this a good idea after your crash? I'd be a little concerned about the weight of the bag throwing you hips out of line and undoing any good work you have done with exercise/physiotherapy...

Just a thought as I know my dodgy knees alone have damaged my hip/lower back area, I dread to think what the weight of the bag would do to yours.

Just turn up at the sorting office at 5am and ask if they need any casuals.
This is how I got working as a postie for the summer when I was a student.

They might, or might not, but will take you on quite easily
You'll only get 12 or 13 weeks of work in a go, before having to take a week 'off' because if you work longer, then you'd have to go on contract.

Thanks for the concern, this is a goof point but i have been fine since about march. very strong except my arm broke and need a bone graft at christmas, but can easily avoid carrying heavy weights with it. TBH bar work it worse as bottling up requires holding heavy boxes with both arms.
