Cheap hot hatches

Looking for an old school hot hatch, doesn't have to be stupidly quick but nippy enough and relatively low maintenance. Budget is around £1k, the two obvious options are:

205 GTI 1.6

Mk2 Golf GTI 1.8

Any other recommendations?

I like Mini's but they're overpriced for what they are.

All the others you suggested are too slow, needs a bit of go to it. The build quality of my friends Fiat Punto 1.6 Sporting was awful, other Fiats seem to follow this trend.

Or Renault Clio 16v/Williams/RSi? Wouldn't go near a R5 GTT that sells for a grand if I were you, it will be a money pit.

Edit: Perhaps not a Williams, there's a low mileage one on eBay for £5k !

I think the Mk2 Golf is the only choice really. Go for an 8v one, they are not much slower than the 16 valvers but are much much cheaper and a piece of piss to work on.

I would go for a Peugeot 306 gti or a Renault Clio Sport.

The older Civics are worth a look as well, especially the VTi versions. Not always the fastest but reliable and can be tuned pretty easily.

Cheers for all the replies, loads more than I'd ever considered.

TBH, the Mk2 8v seems to be the best option but I'm open minded and whatever mentioned comes up at the best price I'll nab. Will post results

A quick warning about the mk.2 gti is that they are reasonably nickable, so if they don't have a Thatcham alarm and/or immobilizer they are very expensive to insure.

I looked at one recently and the insurers I spoke to wouldn't insure without an alarm/immobilizer. So make sure you have budgeted for adding one if it doesn't have one.

Marjay, cheers for the offer but I'm not quite ready to buy yet. When I'm sorted I'll shout you and see if he's still got it .

The mk3 would do, but I much prefer the square retro lines of the Mk2. Also cheers for the heads up on the alarm, will keep my eye out for that .
