i recently bought a 2nd hand 1993 kawasaki zzr 400 and its not in "running condition" when i got it. then i immediately took it to my certified bike mechanic so after a week of dismantleling it and repairing the carbs, flushing radiator water, checking water pump etc..it runs smoothly the only problem is that after a few kilometers while riding it ,,first the bike jerks like misfiring then it suddenly stalls and the engine dies but after a few minutes or so the engine runs again then the problem starts all over again after a kilometer ride...can you pls help me what causing this problem??my mechanic told me that all cooling system is great i even saw it while the radiator cap is off the water runs great and the engine in normal state of temperature...is this electrical problem?or maybe the CDI is worn out?

all inputs are very much appreciated thanks

from the philippines ride safe ya'll

Hi

My first guess with a problem like that would be fuel starvation, probably from a blocked breather hose for the fuel tank (could just be kinked). Takes a while to have an effect, but as fuel is used and air cannot get into the tank to replace it, it builds up low pressure in the tank until the pressure is low enough to stop fuel getting out of the tank. When it happens try opening the fuel cap while listening carefully. If you hear air being sucked in and then the bike starts fone then that is the problem.

Could also be other things, such as a blocked fuel filter, dodgy fuel pump (think the ZZR has a fuel pump), coil getting too hot, etc, but the breather would be the first thing I would check.

All the best

Keith

The first thing that sprung to my mind when reading the symptoms was also fuel starvation.

Go with Keith's suggestions above and then come back...

Thumbs Up

The breather is not a fuel line, it is to allow air into the tank. Possibly comes off the top of the tank and is a hose going down from the back of the tank to near the rear wheel. Possibly just a small hole in the fuel cap. Try taking the bike for a run and removing the fuel cap immediatly when it stops.

All the best

I agree with Keith, all the bikes I have had have had 2 hoses coming from the bottom of the tank that go to the bottom of the bike you should see them hanging down slightly. Lift the tank up then put it down but as you are putting it down get somebody to pull on these lines gently to keep them taught this should stop them being kinked.

Here is a picture of mine from the Speed Four.

Cant be a good mechanic then, the ZZR400 has a fuel pump.... Without one fitted you will get the fuel starvation problems you describe.

You can download the fiche with all the part numbers here:
https://ybrclub.com/_files/books/kawasaki/kawasaki_zzr400_microfiches.zip

Id imagine the fuel pump from a ZZR600 will ge the same. Also a Facet or other pattern pump should do the job also.

Hi

There might well be 2 non fuel pipes. One as a breather and possibly another to allow water to drain away from around the filler cap.

All the best

Keith
