PostPosted: 17:22 - 14 Feb 2010    Post subject: allymoss's 2nd Annual Overhaul of the GS125 - 2nd UPDATE! Reply with quote

The end of winter is in sight and my bike is falling to pieces so I thought I would do my annual full strip down and rebuild now.

The plan is to go from full bike down to the frame and engine. Clean everything and paint everything that needs painting and reassemble all in time for work Tuesday morning.

I started at midday today (Sunday) and by 4pm I had the bike stripped, the frame cleaned, most of the parts I took off have also been cleaned. These pictures show what it was like about 15 minutes into the strip down when I remembered my camera.

https://www.digi-camuk.co.uk/random/bike/pics2010feb/1.jpg
Headlight glass had smashed when I came off a few weeks ago and haven't got the cash to replace so a morrisons bag will do to keep water off the bulb.

https://www.digi-camuk.co.uk/random/bike/pics2010feb/2.jpg
Shocks, wheel, header pipe, sprocket carrier and sprocket, brake pedal and linkage all in need of a polish

https://www.digi-camuk.co.uk/random/bike/pics2010feb/3.jpg
Just a little surface rust

https://www.digi-camuk.co.uk/random/bike/pics2010feb/4.jpg
Most parts stripped off the bike

https://www.digi-camuk.co.uk/random/bike/pics2010feb/5.jpg
Note the salt on everything all seems to collect on the brake hubs

https://www.digi-camuk.co.uk/random/bike/pics2010feb/6.jpg
Where my centre stand broke off last week. This is why the bike is balancing on bricks

https://www.digi-camuk.co.uk/random/bike/pics2010feb/7.jpg

https://www.digi-camuk.co.uk/random/bike/pics2010feb/8.jpg

https://www.digi-camuk.co.uk/random/bike/pics2010feb/9.jpg

https://www.digi-camuk.co.uk/random/bike/pics2010feb/10.jpg
Note rust. Took about 30 mins to get the axle bolt out. Combo of air impact wrench and lots of wd40

https://www.digi-camuk.co.uk/random/bike/pics2010feb/11.jpg
My ignition electrics covered in tape and salt from the other day when I broke down because wires had corroded so for a little protection from the elements I wrapped them in tape.

https://www.digi-camuk.co.uk/random/bike/pics2010feb/12.jpg
Mmmmm engine grease and salt and sh1t everywhere

https://www.digi-camuk.co.uk/random/bike/pics2010feb/13.jpg
Tasty fork stanchions with a bit of surface rust on them

If pictures don't work tell me. They probably won't all work for the next 30 mins anyway. My server is a failure

Right now it is raining and I had to quickly cover everything up as I stupidly didn't do it in the shed so I couldn't get any pics of it cleaned up.

Tomorrow is finish cleaning and paint day and hopefully reassemble by tea time. Might be adding nitrous to it. I bought a kit for a mini moto a while ago that delivers a 5-10 second burst or little bursts from little cannisters which should be useful when outrunning the cops etc

Bloody hell that is one mingey bike. And you managed to strip it down in that short space of time. Top one as they say. Thumbs Up

Noticed you don't get much fork dive. Is that your smooth riding or do those crusty forks hide some progressive springs?

Looking forward to seeing your old machine getting some TLC.

Suspension is actually pretty good on this. Can't even feel small bumps even when I know they are there. Rear shocks are not very good.

I was cleaning the forks earlier on and accidentally spilt some oil out. best bit was one fork had red oil in it, the other a greeny colour.

I couldn't ride something like that, in that condition, on the road at all. Time for a good clean and a bit of TLC Thumbs Up

Neglect? All I'm seeing is the standard Suzuki finish. Sad

its neither neglect or usual suzuki finish, its the result of you silly brits salting your roads, there is no need for it,
when was the last time you saw a unrestored mk 1 escort?? or a cortina?? back in the early 90's??
they are still common as muck here in nz.

ban salting the roads i say,

and its a gs125, not an old norton

I like your thinking but I'm curious as to if NZ gets a) as icy as the roads here get and b) has as many treacherous hilly and windy roads especially when point a is in effect?

My TDM hadn't been cleaned in about 6 months, I hosed her off at the weekend, she was not where near that bad, a few spots of rust on the fork stations and that was it.

Ok today was not very productive.

1. A friend came round with another friend who wanted new rollers fitting to his ped so I did that and earnt an 8gb ipod nano which isn't bad.

2. It started raining pretty badly.

I managed to get quite a bit done though.

yeah we get all the same crap as you guys, in the south its probably gets colder,
but we just grit (small stones) over the ice and snow,
are you kidding about the hills??? our main highway is at a higher altitude than Ben Nevis, then there are the roads that head up into the hills from there. salt is the devil!!! the devil i tell you,
my vf1000 is an 84, its never been restored, and its been ridden in all weather for 88000 km, and there isnt a speck of rust on it
my van has 350000km on it, and there is 1 peice of surface rust the size of a 10p coin on it

the Norwegians don't salt there roads and they have far worse weather,
the right tyres and better driving skills works wonders,

i say let nature take its course and let darwin sort out the useless drivers

Yeh salt + water + not being looked after + Suzuki finish isn't a good combo.

I know it is not the best restoration but for less than 12 hours in total when I finish I hope it will be OK for now. Just want to get rid of the rust, and give the engine a service.

Going to do oil + filter change, new plug, few other bits and pieces and hopefully a new chain and sprocket kit as the current ones are pretty worn.

I painted the centre stand because I am getting a piece of bar from college, inserting it inside what's left of mine and welding it in. Also going to get the side stand welded back on hopefully.

Hopefully the rain will keep off tomorrow so I can get it rolling again and continue in the shed. Still balancing on bricks atm.

Well today haven't got much done so far.

Got front wheel on, clocks and most of wiring done. Back brake assy and rear wheel kind of on.

Then it just started snowing epicly heavy. Big lumps of snow and quite fast. Not settling, far too warm as it is sunny but it is falling quickly. Really need the bike working by this evening Crying or Very sad

Finally got it 95% together and went for a mini hoon to get petrol and make sure it was all ok.

Handlebars are in a much better position meaning I sit more upright.
Need to adjust rear brake
Headlight still needs sorting.
No indicators on it atm which is how I am leaving it till I have more time when I can tinker with it.

The lovely smell of burning hammerite as I pulled into the petrol station Laughing
