Today I noticed my chain had rusted slightly.
I sprayed chain lube on it. Is it ok or not? Should I remove the rusted surface? If so, how should I do it?
I didn't think it rusts only in 4 months, and I was told once that I spray lube too much, I didn't spray intentionally but it was wrong.

You should have seen the state of my chain during the winter. Once I wasn't using the bike for a week and when I got back on it, you couldn't see a single bit that wasn't covered in rust on the chain. Yours is still in a pretty good condition compared to that.

To be honest I wouldn't worry about it too much, try to wipe off as much as you can, lube it, ride it, and it will be good as new. (well, almost) Oh and check for stiff links .

Give it a good scrub with some WD40 and a brush or a rag. Then wipe the WD40 off and put some more chain lube on Thumbs Up

I wouldn't use wd40 on a chain.

It is only surface rust, give the chain a good covering with chain lube and take the bike for a ride. That should get rid of the worst of the rust Smile

Why not? Neutral

I always clean my chains with WD40 before cleaning it off and putting new lube on.

As WD40 is a penetrating oil it will remove the grease from inside the X/O rings.

If you need to clean the chain, then I use cheap engine oil on a rag, and then wipe the chain.

I debated wither or not to use WD40 to clean my chain, but after some research online I decided just to go ahead and do it.

WD40 gets inside the o rings and removes the grease which will shorten chain life, just lube it, I clean mine with petrol and one of these.

If it was a one off I wouldn't worry about it.

But continual use of WD40 on a drive chain will shorten its life.

I'm sure I paid half that for mine, can't remember where from though so not much use Laughing

What I do is get a rag soak it in petrol, and rub it into the chain then you the brush to shift the stubborn stuff then a cleaner rag. I would just the brush on it;s own first if it was really dirty.

Well the chain hasn't needed adjustment after fitting just a front sprocket. Everything else was fine so I bought a cheap front sprocket and thought it might give me a 1000 miles and my chain will die. Or it could last, and it seems to be lasting. I guess running with a Scot Oiler will help. I'd really recommend a Gold DID chain.

WD40 is safe to use on O-Ring chains, the O rings are sealed and it does not get inside. I always use it to clean my chains and it does not shorten the life of my chains. WD40 guys say it is safe to use to clean chains too.

WD40 does not even damage rubber even if it did happen to get to the O-Rings...

If the WD40 is getting past the O ring, the O ring has already failed.

You continue to use WD40 then.

I choose not too Thumbs Up

I dont seem to be the only one to believe that WD40 is bad for a chain.

And please keep it civil.

Now i know this isnt quiet the same thing but my BMX i used to get to work (fairly long ride with a biigg hill or two) has survived 2 years and after not using it over winter it was practically rusted solid!

Threw a bunch of old engine oil over it, kept turning the pedals and after a few days of riding, bobs your unkle, looks nearly new again (black oil acting as camoflauge maybe?) but still works just fine heh.

The sprockets on my nsr were worn something horric (thin and almost wavey (on a bike allegedly 7,000 miles old Neutral), chain in about the same condition lol. New chain and sprockets, am looking at some wax as i only have the sprey outt'a a can stuff at the mo which cant be that great Neutral

Ok sorry Very Happy

Arguing about WD40 is a bit like arguing what oil is best.
