Ill save us all a lot of hassle, and cut a long story short...

Whilst riding to a training session earlier, the chain became loose on my gsxr750. Thumbs Down

Then the back wheel locked... Thumbs Down Thumbs Down

It then freed up Thumbs Up

and the chain trashed everything it came into contact with... Thumbs Down Thumbs Down Thumbs Down
Crying or Very sad
Basically, its smashed something containing coolant, just behind the clutch adjustment cover on the engine.
What is this? Is it the pump housing? Are they mega-bucks? Is it fubar'd? Should I keep Crying or Very sad , or just Sad

Thanks in advance for any help
Karma accordingly...

Cheers,
Jack

That's the place the expansion bottle will typically go.
It's not mega-essential, but worth replacing.

When the radiator gets too hot, it will vent into there - as it cools it sucks it back into the radiator.
Often taken off on race bikes and the like.

Ok, sounds good... Thumbs Up

Just for my own piece of mind, is that normally made out or a metallic material?
Because there was a big old shard of metal in the bottom of the fairing when I stopped... Question

Hopefully thats all it'll be, or something equally minimal...

Cheers G Karma

Usually plastic - however there's likely to be bits of metal around.

Might be best if you could get some pics.

Did your chain actually snap or come off? You need to remove the front sprocket cover really and make sure it hasn't cracked the crankcase anywhere (the main 'shell' of the engine). That lump of metal must've broken off somewhere so find it. You might be lucky and it's just part of the sprocket cover or something else that can be replaced, not always that lucky.

It's unusual for a chain to suddenly become loose, if you have damage around the front sprocket area i'd say the sprocket has come adrift or the teeth have sheared maybe output shaft or rear wheel bearing collapsed even.

If your lucky the metal will be just part of the sprocket cover, if not it could be part of the crankcase.

Ok, Cheers for the tips guys, always nice to know where to start....
It is now the morning after, and I am feelin a little calmer about the whole situation. Neutral

A friend/neighbour has offered to lend me a bike of theirs to use until I get my baby fixed/evaluate the damage...

Im just headin outside to start stripping the fairing etc...

Expect updates,

Cheers

Meant to say before, the chain broke.

The fairing is off, i've stripped it down to the damaged parts Thumbs Up

The sprocket cover has taken the brunt of it, but is just about still usable, only one fitting point sheared off.

The part thats confusing me is the part that was holding a lot of coolant, its not the reserve tank I dont think, as tis is mounted by the fairing. Its round, and appears to bolt on to the engine, directly infront of the front sprocket.

All in all, pretty repairable I would say at this point, but we shall see. Neutral

Next job is to take the unidentified damaged part off, and head to my local garage, to find out A) What is it, B) How much is it & C) How soon can they get me one!!!

Cheers
Jack

So, to summarise, the parts I need are
Arrow New Chain
Arrow New Sprockets
Arrow New Pump Housing
Arrow New Sprocket cover

Im gonna have a look about for prices now, what would you expect to pay for that little lot?

Cheers again all

Arrow New Chain Arrow New Sprockets - £100 or so for a set, maybe a little more.
Arrow New Pump Housing - maybe £25 or so, depends on the year of the bike and how lucky you are, on the second hand market.
Arrow New Sprocket cover - you don't NEED a sprocket cover, again £10 or so, depending on the second hand market (racers often don't use them, so worth looking that way.

Well, thanks for all the input, its been most appreciated.

I've got the chain and sprockets, cost £120 for the kit.
I've had no luck sourcing the new parts, other than new, and thats gonna cost... Sick

Also, just realised that the clutch push rod was sheared too, will need replacing.

Have looked into it, and the part I was calling the sprocket cover encorporates the clutch adjuster, so is an unfortunate nessescity.

Am waiting on a few places, so when I hear, I will let you know.

Also, Im working on the pics, if only to whore the damage Laughing , but my camera has decided to freak out. Would buy a new one normally, but im afraid fixing the bike will cost everything I have... Thumbs Down

Will try and borrow a friends...

Ps. The FZX750 I have been loaned is a winner! Cheers Paul!

Cheers,
Jack

All of the above!
I've always been pretty lax in the maintinence department, not that thats an excuse. Confused

Im fully aware that it is my own fault, and that I have cost myself a fair few quid, not to mention a f@*kload of hassle. Evil or Very Mad

But its made a lot easier with all of the helpful replies I've had on here, and of course, by my neighbour loaning me a bike. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Time to dust off the toolkit I guess... Thumbs Down

Wasnt ment as a jibe just a reminder that neglecting that kind of thing could have turned out much worse, have seen pics of chains slapping peoples legs after snapping and causing some nice damage.

Cheers mate, I wasn't sure in what context you had said it, think I just took slight umbrance at someone pointing out my blatant lack of maintinence... Embarassed
No harm done, and I appreciate the amount of damage that could have been done, to me, not the bike! Was very lucky...
As Im hoping to start teaching Kung Fu soon, my legs are pretty important to me... Laughing Thumbs Up
