Adding a Cigarette Lighter to your bike

Alright guys,

Just wondering how many of you guys have added you own Cigarette Lighter sockets to you bikes? My understanding of adding one to my is that it is quite a simple job! My question is, is there a chance that I could fry the battery or something by adding one?

I'll only be charging my phone, GPS, and netbook on it! (one at a time)

I really want to hear from people who have done it! Had any problems?

I do believe the XR has quite small battery. Im sure it would have enough in it to charge all 3 of them devices and start the time. If not its a very easy bike to bump start!

If you use an accumate charger you can get a cigarette lighter or DIN type socket which clips on to your charger cable, bought one myself last week for a fiver.

Look for a 12v marine socket, they're waterproof.

I got mine from Halfrauds, really easy to fit and I have used it to run my sat nav, charge rechargeable batteries and a scala rider, power the pump to inflate the airbed.
Once you have one fitted you will find it really useful.

Consider using a different kind of socket - I find the lighters ones cumbersone and insecure.
I bought some general sockets from vehicle wiring products (google for it) and used them - smaller and more secure for charging. Also daisy chained some for charging multiple things while riding, which worked nicely. Still often use it for a min-compressor.

The KTM nicely has 'accessory' wiring - if I didn't, I think I'd wire in a relay and fuse.

They do a kit that plugs into a tank bag and ends in a cigarette lighter style socket. Looks very neat and tidy, if a little expensive

I'm with G on this one in that as they are designed to stick out of car dashboards they are quite cumbersome.

I have a triple one which also has a USB port and I try and use the USB when I can as it takes up far less space. The socket itself doesn't take up too much space, it's the big chargers that stick out of it.

I can vouch for the £3.50 Hong Kong eBay triple sockets with USB port. I've had mine stuffed under my seat for two winters now and it still works just fine.

I use the extension type of cigarette socket, I cut the mail end of at wire it in to a relay.

Using a relay, means your not overloading the wiring (your cig socket gets its power from the battery directly), a trigger from something like a rear light tells the relay to open up.

If you need a wiring diagram let us know. It's really quite easy though.

I didn't bother with a relay for three reasons:

1. It would have cost me money.

2. My bike is kickstart.

3. My PDA doesn't hold charge very well so if I turned the bike off I'd have to boot it up again once the engine was running and that takes ages.

They had several sockets but opted for this one as its designed for marine applications and its quite rugged to the touch with a splashproof cover.

First started by tinning the wires to then be crimped into the female terminals.

As the wires will be exposed to the elements as it were, I decided to tin them rather than just crimp in place. It should offer some form of resistance to corrosion anyways?

The wires were then cut to length after test fitting the securing plate to the frame. God bless a trellis frame!

After cutting, the other end of the wires were tinned and soldered to the spade fitments.

The socket was then screwed into the securing plate, wires secured along the frame and connected to the battery terminals.

It has an in line fuse now added to the +ve line. Cant for the life of me remember what size though (10 or 15 I think, probably a little over kill for what is needed but hey ho).

As a non smoker I am slightly at a loss to comprehend why you need a cigarette lighter on a motorbike. Surely you need to take your gloves off to fish about in your pockets for a packet of fags and extract one from the packet, so why not grab your cigarette lighter at the same time?? Though as a non smoker I admit I am probably missing the whole point.
P.S. as a motorcyclist who is sick to death of car and van drivers tossing fag ends out of their windows in front of me I'm sure you are one of those rare mobile smokers who don't have the filthy habit of flicking little missiles of fire into your slipstream.
