Well the time has come to finally do something with the zxr750 sitting in the garage for the last couple of years doing nothing.

https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P2140003.jpg

Picked it up as a crash damaged bike just needing a few bits sorted. Well when i dove in i discovered more often than not with projects a lot more of the bike was f*cked than i had initially realised. The rad bracket that goes onto the engine was beyond use as was the radiator it had also managed to hole the pipe that feeds the cams om the left hand side. Tried to change it and the bolt holding from the bottom broke. I lost interest at this point.

Due to lack of fund and moving it sat again without me looking at it till now.

I had looked into putting a 900 engine in the bike for a while after reading the guide on Andy's zxr7500 site. Luckily a family friend happened to be breaking a 900b so picked up a head gasket failed 900b engine.
https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P2140002-1.jpg

It appeared to be all there and if anything was missing i could get anything off his spare 900 Smile .

So i dug it out today and started stripping bits off so the engine so i could drop it out.
https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P1270045.jpg

The engine was dropped out and given away promptly (J1 model crappy capped 100bhp new)
https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P1270047.jpg

Drilled top yoke and fitted some risers with a set of renthals.

https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P1270048.jpg

This is far as i got today.

The plan is a fighter project its for my step dad really as he cant take the strain with clip on's also i never got any fairings with bike so not going to spend money trying to get any.

Nice Wink Thumbs Up

I've done this mod in the past on a ZXR750, but I put on a big bore kit taking the motor up to 950cc. I've also recently brought a ZX7 with ZX9 motor in it which I use as my track bike.

The swap is very easy on the ZXR chassis, you just need to drill out the two engine mounts on the head as it is a few mm out. You will also need to grind a little of the front left mount away as the oil plate and line fouls it ever so slightly.

Oh, and remember to use the ZX9 ECU too as it has a low red line than the ZXR and you don't want to go blowing the motor! Wink

Yeah that's pretty much what i did today Barry

Well started a bit late today but hey. Dug out the engine and proceeded to check the barrels finding one of the cylinders full of water blew it out and pulled the barrels off and had a check.

https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P1270040.jpg
https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P1270041.jpg

All appeared OK so cleared away the rust and and put the barrels back on. Fitted the complete top end roughly without the cams to get an idea of the dimensions.

Sat the lower back engine mount and used a jack to raise the engine into place. As stated in the guides on Andy's zxr site a small chunk needed to be removed from the left hand frame mount for the oil way.
https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P1280051.jpg
Thus begun a long repetitive cycle of lowering and raising the engine till it sat right.

Got the rear engine mounts into place and then drilled the top engine mounts to line up with the frame. Last thing for the night was to take a bit out of the back of the engine mount so a nut would onto the bolt.

Will get picture later with the engine mounts and the engine sitting later.

Well the engine is now to a point where all the mounting points are sorted drilled and ground out enough
https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P1290043.jpg
https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P1290042.jpg
Was fairly surprised at how easy it was to do.

Got the carbs and airbox sat in place with the tank and seat and it all seems to sit ok. Was a bit worries with the height difference mating up the airbox and carbs to the engine but seems fine.

https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P1290040.jpg

So dropped the engine back out to start sorting it.

https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P1300045.jpg

Pulled the head and barrels back off to strip the crap paint a previous owner had put on. Also popped the valves out to clean then and re grind them back in. Also checked for warp but appears to be within tolerances.

https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P1310049.jpg
https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P1300048.jpg
https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P1310050.jpg

So next thing is to clean the gasket faces and mask the head and barrels off and give them coating of some heat resistant paint when i can get some and if i can find any PJ1 in silver..

If you do think this is a problem, I have a set of short intake rubbers which will allow the carbs to sit about 10mm closer to the motor, giving a little more clearance.

Looking good so far Thumbs Up

Barry will let you know if i need any thanks Thumbs Up . Hopefully should be fine got a set of 750 and 900 inlet rubbers to go on.

Well a bit of a slow time since the last update. Ordered the full gasket set at the nice sum of £160 odd quid from Kawasaki Shocked . To be told it would take two weeks as there wasn't one in the UK..

So pulled more of the engine apart and started to clean the bottom end up.
https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P2020040.jpg
https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P2020041.jpg
https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P2020042.jpg
https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P2020043.jpg
https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P2020046.jpg

Also did this to check for debris and found who ever did the clutch last had a big thing for instant gasket and it was everywhere. The oil strainer was clogged with it Sick . Also found that when the clutch was last done one of the tangs for the plate that sits under the clutch retaining nut had snapped and disappeared into the engine, apart from that all looks to be good.

So left the bottom end to look at the back end. The previous owner had slid it down the road so there was a few scars from this. Pulled the swinging arm off with a bit of force thanks to the pivot bolt being seized to the bushes(luckily every other bearing bush was ok.

https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P2020045.jpg
https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P2020044.jpg

So filled some of the deeper dings and flattened it off a bit still a bit to go. Also started stripping the rear wheel as the paint was a bit far gone in places.
https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/babykat250/zxr750900/P2050050.jpg

So yeah my list of things to do slowly gets bigger..

I used to own a ZXR750, loved it.

Now i own a 9R.

Just wondering, why put a 9 engine in the z750. The J model is 195kg as it is. Adding the 9 engine will only add to this weight.

Would you not have a faster better handling and more comfortable bike if you just got a post 98 ZX9R?

Loving the pics though, looking forward to the next instalment.
