PostPosted: 15:22 - 15 May 2013    Post subject: suzuki bandit cut out at lights now started again Reply with quote

hi all
bought a 99 600n bandit a few week ago.
its been running fine up until now
I have used the bike everyday for work and its never let me down.
on the way home yesterday at a set of lights it just cut out and has refused to start since.
I got the bike home last night in a van eventually.
I tried starting it for so long the battery went dead so I left the battery on charge overnight hoping to solve the problem today.
so I get home from work battery on everything works
bike turns over fine but will not start
things I have tried so far ...
petrol fresh and plenty in tank.
petrol getting through to carbs and plugs are wet.
air filter is fine.
no loose connections or shorting out.
also when I taken no 1 plug out and put against frame then turned over spark was weak then would get loud backfire(boooom) Laughing
so I cleaned plugs up put back in and it started for about 30 secs then died again.

iam guessing could need new plugs or coil packing in.
any other ideas as don't want to spend a fortune on plugs, leads, coil pack, cdi etc
need the bike to get to work thanks in advance.

Try cleaning up all the points where the coils connect to the frame with emery cloth. The trim the HT leads where they go into the plug caps by about 5mm and then screw back into the caps. Also clean up the tangs where the wiring loom connects to the coils as well as the earth point on the back of the engine and the earth terminal on the battery.

Check the condition of the spark on all 4 plugs and report back to us.

do u have a spark? a mate bought 4 plugs only to find out it was his 1-3 coil pack had gone? allso on my old rd125 flying down the road the cdi just stoped, check you do have a spark if not check, ht leeds, coil pack, loose wires on the coil pack, brakes/damage to wires, cdi or check to see if you have power from the fly wheel

all connections cleaned up and dry
no loose wires or connections
all leads trimmed down 5mm
I have good spark from 1+4 at lead and plug end
not been able to test 2+3 as battery went dead again so quick charge and try 2+3 later

what I did notice when I taken tank off was that with fuel tap turned to on or reserve no fuel comes out
but trickles out when switched to prime
there is plenty of fuel in as fuel level is far higher than both filters inside the tank

hope that makes sense

also when I try to start the bike on prime you just get a loud BANG Laughing

I don't know the ins and outs of bandits, but my fuel tap is the same on the triumph. Mine has a vacuum hose on the back, so that when it's in the run/reserve position, the fuel will flow. Without the vacuum (so when engine is off/hose isn't attached) you don't get any flow.

As for the "bang" with it on prime... Would suggest to me that there's a problem with your fuelling. I would start at the tank, work my way though the filter, taps, hoses, carbs etc trying to find something out of the ordinary.

If you can't afford CR9EK, just use CR9E. My bandit runs fine on them, all they do is spark..

Do you have an alarm fitted?

Yes it's normal. PRIME by-passes the vacuum tap.

What alarm do you have fitted?

The alarm is a v2 m357t
Unsure of make
But it has a little key fob which you press to diactivate alarm or immob
But it works fine anyhow

So I put battery back on the bike about 6 this mornin before work
So checked spark to leads 1+4
And leads 2+3
And I have good spark to all leads
Cleaned up plugs and checked they all spark good
Put plugs back in
tank on
turns over won't start
So tank off again
And now I have no spark to any leads ???
I have disturbed no wires all fine
At this point was late for work so left it and got the bus
Will have a try again later

Well she runs again
Got in from work
taken tank and side panels off
Pulled all wiring out to check every connection taped up where needed
and put wires back in tidy
put battery on again after another charge And I have spark to all pugs and leads
Tank back on and she started on the button
I don't know if this is a good thing or bad
As this problem may not have gone and may leave me stranded again
