Right my mate and I have been discussing this today so I thought I would put it out here and see what everyone thinks. In bike racing they have that thing that limits the revs in the pits making them slow down travelling through the pit area right? (Bear with me this is going somewhere) All of the police and councils state that speed cameras are only there for safety and not revenue, right? if this really is the case why don't they fit electronic devices to cars and bikes that limit vehicles to 30 mph in towns and cities? With the cheap price of electronics available today it would be a simple matter of mounting some form of transponder to speed signs that govern the speed of the vehicle by radio/infra red/microwave/whatever there must be a way of doing this that would be far cheaper than fitting cameras everywhere or having policemen hiding in vans/hedgerows when they could be put to better use fighting real crime. What are others feeling on this idea? Discuss....or take the p*ss. |

The technology to do such a thing has been viable and economically so for at least a decade.
It has been bouncing about in the UK and EU halls of bureaucracy for at least as long.
Only trouble is... no-one wants to commit political suicide and do it.... except the Germans... keep up with the news watch TuV!
Alternatively, any political party who wished a political coup over road safety merely has to BAN MOTORCYCLES.... less than 5% of road vehicles, barely 1% of motorised road miles, and more than half of those purely recreational road-use... YET 20% of the KSI figures.
In one fell swoop they could claim a 'major' increase in road safety; and piss of a mere minority of voters who would not get much public sympathy, as most think we are a bunch of thrill seeking, suicidal lunatics to begin with.
Fact that its so often the car drivers fault bikers get KSI's is immeterial. If there were no bikes, there'd be no bikers, and therefore none to get KSI'd. Problem gone.
$ Value of the UK Bike Industry? Yeah Right! So they don't see so much UK currency flowing to Japan and China, and the total number of people put out of work / business would be less than when they Let Long-Bridge fall! It REALLY isn't a reason stopping them! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Awful idea in my opinion. Totally restricting peoples freedom and nannying to a point we might as all roll over and be taxied around in accident-proof automated google cars that collect every last bit of data to improve safety and marketing. Thats where things will end up going down this route afterall, isnt it |

Speed limits have been used for revenue raising rather than road safety since day 1.

It's been over a century since this was flushed into the open. Why would it change now?
That said, I could see Brussels going for it if Bosch buys enough MEPs. But it would habituate people to driving with their foot on the floor all the time and the speed traps would just move to a hundred metron-yards beyond the last speed limiter post, solid gold guarantee. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Surely these parts that are fitted would be "unreliable" and frequently stop working on peoples bikes. Unfortunately as someone who expected it to work I would have assumed the bike was sticking to the limit as it would seem I'm not trusted to judge speed myself. Obviously it would only have stopped working on the day when I got caught by the police of course... but that's just a coincidence officer |
