I intend to buy this.. its going to save me money over having parts made (which is bloody expensive!) and a lot of time over trying to bodge with wrong tools (a cheap hand drill is not a lathe.. bearings fucked ). ***

A small lathe should be able to do most things I want. A mill would have some advantages and be easier to set up and use? but lack screw cutting. The above looks like one of the better ones available?
(budget under £1000 inc tooling, to fit on decent sized bench and be moveable by me, without help)
*** I will probably end up with less spare time and money |

I assume you mean english? the problem with those is most are very big and heavy. The ones that are not are usually imperial gears/lead screw or very far away...
Alternatively Im tempted to buy a headstock, and XY table and some suitable lumps of metal for a Z column and other fixtures. I like the idea this would let me do in-place removal of things like exhaust studs..

Not necessary English, depends on the application, if it was me I would want the best 2nd hand lathe I could get for £450.
if you want to use it for essentially a big drill then fair enough. I would be looking at something like this if it was me. |

£205 postage though - that makes it a ripoff for sure.

You can do almost any milling work in a lathe too.
Use your head.

That machine is junk. You'll find that the gib on the cross-slide doesn't fit properly, it allows the slide to lift and causes chatter and poor finish. They also have a habit of stripping gears and burning out motor controllers. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

I swear it said £205 postage when I looked last night
It does look like a re-badged Clarke or Sealey though - and you might be right about the hand drill - the motor is only 550W.
I am looking for something similar at the moment, but I don't think this would be powerful enough. ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)

Its not so much about power, most small lathes will be similar.. Rigidity of machine is far more important - and something the Chinese ones are known to be lacking, but probably adequate for me.. the bed only weighs 13kg
My issue is the limited space, if your able, get the heaviest thing you can find. Sealey and clarke, draper, silverline etc.. are big brands that do not make a single thing themselves.
| Quote: | It is very important not to "over-motor" a Myford (or indeed any other lathe); any accident or dig in will have far more serious consequences - and if the machine is worked beyond its capacity, excessive wear will occur. Early ML7s were fitted with 1/3 hp motors, later ones with 1/2 hp - the latter a figure that should not be exceeded. Apart from the very first examples, the Super 7 has always been equipped with a 0.75 hp motor (necessary to pull the top speed of over 2000 rpm) and this too should be respected as an absolute maximum. |

Granville lathe in Woking. Probably 3 times the weight of that noodle and not metric but what a nice machine. Inside, outside and soft jaws on a Pratt chuck, that's got to be worth near the current bid price.

There's a Warco 300 on Gumtree. It's a bit limiting in it's work envelope because of the cross-slide table but it does double-up as a milling machine, of sorts.

One of these just today sold for £840 on eBay. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

ML4 in Luton currently very cheap. I know it's old and it looks rusty but it would clean up to work better than that noodle and hasn't been butchered. Apparently has all it's changewheels, original paint and for a bonus it will cut both Metric and English threads.
