I was over joyed last friday night when i was returning home from newquay for a 170 odd mile ride to the good old farmer county of wiltshire when i met an accident on the M5.

Now, don't get me wrong i felt really bad for the people involved and i wouldn't want it to happen but i was exstatic i could filter through the tail back in the knowledge that all the car drivers weren't goin any where for some time, it was about a 3 mile tailback.

Had a few close calls to the back ends of lorries and wing mirrors but didn't touch anything. Not only this i went past a german reg bike, he soon followed. As he came past me afterwards gave me the thumbs up and sped off.

I know this probably sounds a little childish and nerdy but i got such a good feeling from this, does anyone else feel this? or the opposite?

yea i like it when you filter and other bikers follow as you relise that they can, sort of, if that makes sence.

the other day i was following a liter bike looked like a R1 but was hard to tell form behind and was quite fun trying to keep up with him, i also find following people when filtering you can learn a few techniques.

You need to be carefull filtering up towards a crash though. I came across an accident on the M73 one time where a Fiesta had clipped a car, bounced off the central barrier, hit another car, hit the barrier again then rolled to a halt.

The accident had only just happened and there were big lumps of car and oil strewn across the roadway for at least a mile (by big lumps I mean wheels, battery, car jack, doors etc) there was nothing left of the car other than the 'safety cell' out of which the occupants had miraculously walked relativley unscathed (I stopped to check).

Filtering over the top of a car battery would spoil your day.

Very true though, I once rode over a bit of plastic litter (water bottle or simular) and even that almost took the front wheel out from under me!

The best bit MUST of been once u got past the accident. Wasn't there miles of road with no cars where you could of raced the other bike?

I great story my dad told me was he was crossing the thames at the dartford tunnel, all the cars were stopped to reduce congestion up ahead. All the bikes including dad and his mates filtered to the front, and waited for a good 10 minuites. Then they let everyone go and a good 50 or so superbikes raced on a free road togther. He said it sounded amazing all the bikes echoing in the tunnel Very Happy Wish i was there Sad

PS he said he came 3rd lol

coming home from visiting the folks in exeter i was travelling on the M23 by southampton, traffic had slowed and i started filtering through it, came to the blockage, which was a car stoped in the fast lane, no body was stopping to let them get to the hard shoulder, so i stoped my bike across the middle lane and put my hand up, to my utter disbelieve everyone stopped, the people in the car pushed it to the hard shoulder and i was left with three lanes clear to the eyes could see, thumbs up to the car drivers who stopped and i was away upto a ton in 6-7 seconds! Twisted Evil Thumbs Up

Bilbo,

Which M5 were you on because the one I use does not run through Whiltshire Question

andy13_uk,

How do you know you were following a 1ltr bike if you don't even know what sort of bike it was Question

I like filtering. I feel rather smug and feel really fucked off if I am stuck in my car and smug bikers whiz past.

Filtering is really fun at points, but it can be so dangerous.
Going home the other day from Taunton, huge traffic jams, and I went past the accident which had slowed things up even more from the previous accident, apparently a biker was filtering at about 50 and hit something, went past as the emergency services got there, it looked like he had spinal injuries to me, they didn't have him in the recovery position.

Must have been a litre bike at least if he was ahead of his RS125 surely? Wink
I was stuck in the cage going down the M6 on Sunday. Utter pisser, took four and a half hours to do Ulverston to Sheffield (normally 1.5 to 2ish hours Thumbs Down) Pain. Still, made sure I was out of the way enough for the bikes to scoot past, despite the fact I resented them for it Very Happy

It is the best feelin know all those unlucky car drivers a stuck in traffic and will be for some time!

I work in North London and have to use the North Circular. On the way home there is traffic all over the place and even if there EXTRA traffic it adds another 5mins to the journey rather than another 30mins!

LOVE IT!

Another thing i thinks fantastic is pullin up at the traffic lights after filtering through miles of traffic and then sittin right next to MR £25000 BMW and knowin that he's been sat in that traffic for ages and here i am taking up his space at the front of the lights!

Then they try and race off the lights! - Please! why do they bother! ....and im gone!

I know it pisses them right off and I LOVE IT!!

i was not a 100% but i looked slightly too big for a 600cc and defernetly wasnt a 750cc so presumed it was a litre probably an R1, as the tail and colour look like a R1. That wasnt the point and the only reason i was able to keep up was because we were both filtering, even a 4t 125cc could keep up with a 1000cc sportsbike when the road it full of traffic and you both going <30mph!!
i probably had the advantage as my bike was smaller than his!and we did get to a duel carrage way section and he was off, but we came to more cars and i cought up with him as somthing was blocking the road for a min

arse, just wrote a beautiful post...and something went wrong in the sending...oh well.

Basically, it was just a word of warning. I ride all day, so I get the pleasure Confused of filtering on motorways/dual carriageways a fair bit.

Be careful of people opening car doors! They tend to do so with no regard for any other vehicles (no checks etc). I have seen a friend almost taken off his bike because someone did this. It seems people assume that because all the cars have stopped, its safe to get out and stretch their legs, examine cats eyes etc.

Anyone else noticed this phenomenon?
