Just spent some time and very little money on my bike. Decided that stainless steel down pipes are to posh for me and had a play with some gumgum and managed to blather it on the exhaust to fix a 10mm x 5mm holes (infact a few holes).

The stuff i used is ace, its like play-doe for men.

I nearly considered buying half a dozen tubs off the stuff and covering all the steel down pipes to prevent any more holes appearing.

My questions are

1) How long will my repair/modification/improvement last?

2.) Am i an Idiot?

ps. I am not a troll and a genuinely did this to my bike, it is not a photoshop

Did the same for a ped I had, depends on the vibrations in the road and how big any cracks/gaps are.

Sometimes mine lasted a day, sometimes a week.

You'll soon get bored of re-applying all the time.
However, I didn't see the condition it was in before, so may last last longer.

But to be fair, I used this stuff to partiality attach my exhaust to the manifold just to one broken stud and the other in half Laughing Laughing

Even if i apply a layer each day for a week? 7 layers should do the job

It will build up and then when it cooks the layers together, it will just come off in one go, did for me anyway.

Use it in conjunction with an exhaust bandage, that will help keep it all on there.

I doubt it, it will most likely just fracture between the layers.

If it were me and I wanted to bodge I'd wrap the pipe in baked bean tins, jubilee clip them on and then wrap then in exhaust bandage, on top of the gungum. That ought to hold you for a while.

Although I can't see why you wouldn't just get it welded...

The holes right below the engine and impossible to weld and the down pipes cannot be removed.

I am tempted by the baked beans can method but will probably go for spaghetti hoops as you can get a can for 6p still at netto.

On second thoughts should i go for heinz as the can might be a bit better quality can?

You could use it in conjunction with a wire mesh but even then it would just be a very short term bodge. Exhaust paste on it's Jack is next to useless.

It's basically a 'get through the MOT' bodge.

The downpipes cannot be removed? Why? Short-term exhaust bodges are just that, you'll be having to play with it over and over again. Much better to replace the downpipes with a nice stainless set that will never need touching again. Sandy's bike spares are cheap for this sort of thing, alternatively why not scour ebay for some good originals? What's the bike?

your right, they CAN be removed, go crazy with the wd 40 and maybe a little heat,, they will come out, and if they do snap, drill them and tap them, time to do a proper job.

Yeah I've bodged with gun gum a few times in the distant past, it's good for a while, but not long or medium term.

best to grind all the rust off first or it will continue to rust and that will break the gun gum also try heating it first before running the engine may give it a chance to harden properly.

But yer ive only used it on the cars years ago with limited success to be honest all these quick fixes for petrol tanks and radiators etc never last.. Thumbs Down
