Mounting a TV to plasterboard wall.

I have a fake plasterboard chimney in my place and I want to mount a TV on it.

Current plan is pull out the iron fake fireplace, send a small child up it with a lump of 2x4 and screw into that to distribute the weight more, any better ideas?

A decent sized tv bracket and a couple of gravity toggles you should be alright.
Unless your tv is old and ridiculously heavy. I fit is, you could go cutting into the board, small section removed and slide some 18mm MDF to spread the load.....

Quick easy and cheap fix then,

Piece of 18mm ply (MDF is too soft I think) cut to size about 4 inches smaller than the TV all round.
Then screw panel to wall (Countersunk fixings so flush screwheads) screwed to wall VIA Rawl UNO plugs
and additionally a generous bead of gripfill all over the rear of the ply so it sticks directly to surface of the
plasterboard too. This is to help spread load and massively reduce strain on fixings, which can't hurt bearing
in mind the substrate. Sand surface of ply, Caulk in edges for tidyness then paint with the same paint as the wall.
What you'll end with is a rectangle of painted ply attached to the wall.

When it's fully dry (approx 48 hours if the place is nice and warm) then just screw TV bracket of
choice directly to ply backboard, no plugs required, Make sure the screws are long enough to go right
through the lot plasterboard and all, so 38-40 mm should suit fine. If it is battened behind, you may be
lucky and catch one or two with screws anyway.

You should get a great solid fix with all the blood and guts hidden by the TV itself, also it steps the TV away
from the wall a little which makes getting behind with a duster a little bit easier

Gonna have a little rant actually, I'm really fucked off with some of the work that has been done before I bought the place. The best way to describe it it is is the person who did it absolutely HATED his job.

Example:- The garden fence was painted. There is brown paint all over the patio, all over the door (a good 3 ft away) there are plants that have been painted rather than moved and the fuck I can only assume wiped off his bushes on the lamp post outside Rolling Eyes

Another one some new lights were fitted upstairs. In the loft the insulation was pulled back where lights were fitted and then left, how much of a fucking arsehole do you have to be not to just tuck the insulation back?

The bathroom was fitted with a new tap, the braided hose that was used was too long so was kinked where it has been asked to bend too much. No water would come out of the cold tap. It took me less than 20 minutes to drive to the nearest plumbing shop, spend £4 something on shorter hoses and reconnect it all. The waste for the Bathroom leaked too, it hadn't been tighten up properly.

I see it all the time Chris, but it keeps me in work. The place I'm working now (not one of mine) was done
up by a minicab driver on a shoestring budget. It shows. However silver linings and all that. I am now the first person
the owner calls for any work that comes up in that particular house regardless of trade. When she bought it,
she employed a general builder, (me) a sparks and a painter to bring it up to a standard where she could
move in, because the 60 a day smoking, deep fried food eating cab driver divorcee had coated the place in a mixture
of grease, nicotine and misery. Plus he added a great deal of dangerous bodgery to his home which all needed rectifying.
Some of the worst I have seen actually, anyway due to their rather unimpressive performance the sparks and painter
have since been sacked and not replaced. I have their work now. Mwhahahaha.

I think you are overestimating what I have done.

The only big jobs are the flooring in one room and clearing the loft and sorting the hatch, both of which took a weekend ish. I have been at it 3/4 weeks now.

The rest has been fixes, plumbing/boiler etc. and the usual door handles/shelves/curtains etc. Other than a table being full of full of tools and the loft hatch needing some trim to blend it into the artex there is nothing remotely building site like. The bigger issue is 2 rooms FULL of unpacked boxes. Laughing

Fasicas - Seeing if it is feasible to DIY
Laminate - done
Loft - awaiting grant application
Plumbing - fixed
More - plumbing - fixed

Oh and My missus' dad has painted the kitchen and a few wooden bits doors/sills etc., he is retired and puts in a few hours a few days a week to help out.

That's always nice when you can rely on family workforce. I did a lot of work in a block of low rise flats last year.
All the rubbish was kept in one of the top floor flats and by the time it was over there was loads of it, Just traipsing
it all through the building down 6 flights of stairs to the van was a mission, but with father in law and a few of
the wifes brothers on board we made light work of it. It cost me a fried breakfast for the lot of them down at the cafe. Thumbs Up

Joiner installed a 50inch TV on our office wall which is a plaster board stud wall thing, not brick anyway.

He found the upright wood supports/studs, screwed a piece of plywood on and attached the tv bracket to the plywood.

Job jobbed, only issue would be if you wanted it really really close the wall as you are pushing out however think the plywood is.

Re. the plumbing - whatever you do, make sure you don't neglect any leaks. We have had a 'drip' leak since we bought our house and it has taken until now for us to find out where it has been coming from - I thought it was a leak behind the tiles in the downstairs bathroom and have had them off twice to see if I could find it, with no success. Turns out it has been coming from a faulty compression joint between the floors.

The upshot of 8 years of tiny leak - sodden chipboard floors, soggy joists and a new downstairs bathroom needed. This is where I am to date...

I installed my tv on plasterboard in my bedroom.

Internal wall, no studding.

Used a fully adjustable mount for the tv and attached it to the wall using a Grip It plasterboard fixing and the thing is fantastic!!

They're like plastic dishes that sit in the plasterboard and when you click it into position it opens up 2 winglets that help spread the force on it. Mightily impressed with them!

Can get 'em in wickes and the like.. different sizes. Well impressed.
